Flying Pigeon Scenic Area

Flying Pigeon Scenic Area

The Flying Pigeon Scenic Area is located within the Xishui National Forest Park and features the following attractions:

Flying Pigeon Ancient Village Gate: Serving as the main entrance to the Flying Pigeon section of the forest park, it consists of the park gate, Sea-View Pavilion, Sichuan-Guizhou Ancient Path, ruins of Qing Dynasty passes (including large, medium, and small village gates and remnants of the city wall),

Yew Tree Grove and Flying Pigeon Rock (a Cretaceous gravel rock, a sedimentary product of an ancient riverbed, characterized by dense texture and unique patterns that, together with cementing materials, form conglomerate rocks with peculiar shapes). The best views here are the sea of clouds at sunrise and the snowy scenery of the yew tree grove.

Water Highway: Consists of two sections — from Tianwantou to the field headquarters, and from the field headquarters to Jiulonggang.

A naturally formed Danxia slab-like riverbed, rare in China, stretches nearly 4 kilometers. Driving through the water offers a unique experience. Major attractions along the banks include:

(1) Mandarin Duck Chinese Parasol Trees

Estimated to be around 500 years old, these two trees grow from a single base and are inseparable.

(2)

Millennium Divine Turtle

Formed by a Danxia-shaped boulder, resembling a turtle about to descend into the stream.

(3)

Swan Waterfall

Composed of a swan-shaped Danxia boulder on the left side of the water highway and a waterfall on the right, creating the illusion of a swan spreading its wings toward the waterfall.

Dicui Lake Campsite: A reservoir formed by damming a mountain valley and stream within the Flying Pigeon Scenic Area, stretching over 400 meters in length and up to 60 meters at its widest. Surrounded by greenery, it forms a tranquil, emerald lake ideal for fishing and boating. The lakeside is equipped with campsites.

Taojiagou Overhanging Valley Waterfall Cluster: The gully is 995 meters long and features two levels of overhanging valleys. The first level extends from the junction with Feigou to 540 meters within the gully, with a drop of about 100–150 meters and a width of approximately 40 meters. The second level spans from 550 to 995 meters. Each overhanging valley contains four waterfalls, totaling eight waterfalls.

Waterfall No. 1: Walking along the stream from the gully entrance, where wild lilies are abundant along the forest edge, you’ll reach this waterfall at 500 meters. It is 15 meters high and 4 meters wide, featuring a narrow curtain-like drop.

Waterfall No. 2: Located at 510 meters, it is 5 meters high and of a composite type — with a vertical face of 3 meters and a curved face of 2 meters. The water flows as a curtain hugging the wall, 2 meters wide.

Waterfall No. 3: Found at 520 meters, it is 4 meters high and 1.5 meters wide, with a curved shape and a 50-degree incline. The water flows as a curtain hugging the wall.

Waterfall No. 4: At 540 meters, it is 6.5 meters high and 2 meters wide, with an 80-degree inclined surface. The water flows tightly along the wall in a long, narrow form.

Waterfall No. 5: At 550 meters, it is a composite waterfall with a total height of 4.5 meters — a vertical face of 2.5 meters and a curved face of 2 meters. The water flows as a curtain hugging the wall, 1.5 meters wide. Both sides feature rock cavities, and the base has a groove-like shape with columnar water flow, 4 meters long.

Waterfall No. 6: At 560 meters, it is 4 meters high and 2 meters wide, with a grooved surface and columnar water flow at a 75-degree incline. The base is a flat stone surface, 10 meters long and 4 meters wide.

Waterfall No. 7: At 580 meters, it is 22 meters high, with water flowing as a curtain hugging the wall in a trapezoidal shape.

Waterfall No. 8: At 600 meters, it is a composite waterfall with a total height of 7 meters — a vertical face of 3 meters and a curved face of 4 meters. It is 2 meters wide, with columnar water flowing tightly along the wall.

Ox Eye Pool: At 650 meters, this is a pool 9 meters long, 5 meters at its widest, and 2 meters deep, oval-shaped, resembling an ox’s eye.

Jiufeng Mountain: Includes the Sichuan-Guizhou Boundary Marker, Golden Dragon Temple, and Shijiagou. The Sichuan-Guizhou Boundary Marker now serves as the dividing line between Chongqing Municipality and Guizhou Province. Established during the Qing Dynasty’s Xianfeng era, later replaced by a slogan board, and recently re-erected, the boundary marker in this scenic location offers a unique charm and is a great spot for tourist photos. Accessible by boat from the Honghai Scenic Area of the Jiangjin Simian Mountain National Key Scenic Spot, followed by an 800-meter walk along the Sichuan-Guizhou Ancient Path to reach Golden Dragon Temple. To the left of the temple is a mountain spring with excellent water quality, known as the Number One Spring of Flying Pigeon, also called Sacred Water Pit. Descending from the right side of the temple along a mountain path leads to Shijiagou. The entrance of the gully has over 10 farmhouses, with the first 400 meters consisting of farmland and the rest being marshland. Surrounding the gully are well-aligned yew tree forests, within which lie two hidden waterfalls: one is 20 meters high and 6 meters wide, curtain-like, accompanied by yew trees and marshland; the other is 18 meters high and 5 meters wide, bead-like. Uniquely, the base of this waterfall features 93 circular pits of varying sizes but very regular shapes, preliminarily believed to have been formed by the impact of waterfall water. These pits resemble stars in the water and are locally called “Sky Star Pits.”
