Guangfu Temple

Guangfu Temple is located on the north side of the lower section of Houjie Street in Beichang Village, Guangshun Town, at 106°22′30″ east longitude and 26°12′50″ north latitude. It sits at an altitude of 1,280 meters and is 27 kilometers from the county seat.

The temple was first built in the ninth year of the Qianlong reign during the Qing Dynasty (1744). Upon entering through the octagonal temple gate, you’ll find a hexagonal pagoda used for burning paper money on June 28th. Passing through a courtyard, you’ll reach the temple’s quadrangle courtyard. On the left are two rooms called the “Lonely Souls Shrine,” and on the right are five rooms known as the “Taoist Residence.” The main hall has five rooms, with the central shrine housing the statue of the “City God, Lord Fude the Great” (commonly referred to as the “City God”). To its sides are enshrined the Eastern and Southern Yama Lords, along with various clay and wooden sculptures of bodhisattvas.

Every year on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month, the City God is paraded around the town in a ceremony commonly known as “carrying the deity.” A large number of devout followers join the procession, while households prepare paper candles and fruit offerings to welcome the deity. The event is lively and has become a distinctive folk tradition in Guangshun.
