Qingyan Zhuangyuan Mansion

Zhuangyuan Mansion was the former residence of Zhao Yijiong, Guizhou’s first top imperial scholar. It is located at No. 1 Zhuangyuan Street in Qingyan Ancient Town, where Zhuangyuan Street intersects with North Street. The southern section of this intersection is called “Xiayuan Street.” There are signposts along the main road of North Street, making it relatively easy to find. In front of the mansion is a simple couplet that reads “A lute and crane compose ambition, the Analects pass on the family ethos,” reflecting the owner’s lifelong aspirations.

The residence faces south and is a two-courtyard quadrangle compound, each consisting of a main hall flanked by two wings. Its architectural style features hip-and-gable roofs, covering a total area of about 700 square meters. The existing structures include the front hall, main hall, two side wings, and the entrance gate. Inside the inner wall of the entrance gate, there are remnants of various “longevity” characters, said to have been left by Zhao Yijiong’s great-great-grandfather, Zhao Lilun, on his 100th birthday. The building is primarily made of wood—imposing yet understated, tranquil and simple, exuding an scholarly charm.
