The Liupanshui Zoo, with a total investment of 14.5 million yuan and a construction area of 3,178 square meters, was built under the responsibility of the Zhongshan Economic Development Zone, with the district’s Urban Management Bureau serving as the specific delegated builder. The project commenced on October 28, 2007, took seven months to complete, and the first phase covers an area of 96 mu. After the start of construction, the project received high attention from the municipal Party committee and municipal government, with city leaders visiting the site multiple times for on-site work sessions or inspections, and instructing that every effort be made to ensure the zoo's successful completion.

Located on the north side of Renmin West Road in the central urban area of Liupanshui and south of the Guiyang-Kunming Railway, Liupanshui Zoo was built on the former site of Qingbi Park. It features a wildlife free-range approach and serves as a comprehensive theme park integrating animal viewing, leisure entertainment, science education, and cultural display. The design of the zoo facilities not only fits the terrain but also reflects the characteristics of caged animals in both architectural form and façade styling. The park buildings are uniquely designed and distributed across varying elevations, with cascading structures complemented by sloped roofs characteristic of Guizhou, harmonizing beautifully with the surrounding hills.

The animal park is divided into walking viewing areas, drive-through viewing areas, animal performance zones, and amusement areas. Visitors can take specially designated sightseeing vehicles along the shimmering lakeside to observe animals or walk among various rare species for fun interactions, experiencing the wonders of the animal kingdom—showcasing the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. The zoo is home to over 120 species and nearly 500 animals (including mammals and birds) from around the world, such as African wildebeest, greater kudu, Siberian tigers, and African lions. Among these, the large animal performance venue has 500 seats, while the bird performance venue accommodates 1,000 spectators. The thrilling and delightful animal performances are sure to leave residents and visitors enchanted. It is reported that, as of now, Liupanshui is one of the fifth prefecture-level cities in the province to have established a zoo.
