Tomb of Wang Bantang

The Tomb of Wang Bantang is a cultural tourism attraction.

Located on Bantangwei Ridge in the eastern suburbs. The tomb covers an area of over 100 square meters, faces south, and stands alongside the circular tomb of his wife, Lady Cao. It is enclosed by square stones, with “guardrails” surrounding the site. Wang Bantang (1849–1904), whose given name was Pengyun, courtesy name Youxia, and literary names Bantang and Wuweng, was a native of Guilin. After passing the imperial examination during the Tongzhi era of the Qing Dynasty, he was promoted from a scribe in the Grand Secretariat to an imperial reading attendant, and later served as an imperial censor of Jiangxi Circuit and then as an imperial censor of the Rites Section. At a time when foreign powers were carving up China, he strongly advocated resistance and sympathized with the Hundred Days' Reform. Known for his outspoken advice, he was dismissed from office after remonstrating against Empress Dowager Cixi’s plan to drain the national treasury to rebuild the Old Summer Palace. He later lived in Shanghai.
