Camel Hill in Guilin

Camel Hill is located within Guilin's Seven Star Park. Also known as the Camel Hump, it lies at the southern foot of Putuo Mountain and is a remnant rock formation created by crustal movement and erosion. Originally called Wine Pot Hill, it earned this name due to its resemblance to an old-fashioned wine pot, with the Chinese characters for "Pot Hill" carved on its southern side.

At the base of Camel Hill, a renowned scholar from southern China once lived in seclusion, making a living by planting flowers and peach trees and writing scholarly works. After his death, he was buried at the southern foot of Pot Hill. In the old days, when the morning sun shone upon the peach blossoms of Pot Hill, the flowers would turn the slopes bright red, earning it the poetic name "Red Glow over Pot Hill." The hill closely resembles a camel lying on the ground, and today visitors commonly refer to it as Camel Hill, a testament to its striking likeness—hence it can also be called "Camel Red Glow."

On the southern side of the hill lies the Bonsai Garden, home to nearly 2,000 exquisite bonsai specimens, each unique in charm and naturally expressive. The scenic area also features fishponds, stacked rocks, flat bridges, winding corridors, waterside pavilions, and terraces.

The winding paths and serene surroundings make it feel like stepping into a fairyland.

It is named as such due to its strong resemblance to a camel. However, it also closely resembles an ancient-style wine pot, hence it is also called Pot Hill. The hill has a pot body and a spout, and beneath the spout lies a rock that looks just like a wine cup. The words "Pot Hill" are inscribed on the spout (on the southern side of the hill), alongside the engraving "Tomb of the Thunder Wine Man."

The hill closely resembles a camel lying on the ground, and today visitors commonly refer to it as Camel Hill, a testament to its striking likeness—hence it can also be called "Camel Red Glow." At dawn and dusk, the glow of the sunset reflects off the rocks, creating a dazzling display of colors. Since the Ming and Qing dynasties, peach trees have been planted all around the hill. When spring arrives, the peach blossoms bloom brilliantly against the river and purple clouds, creating an exceptionally enchanting scene.

In July 1998, after holding an environmental symposium with Chinese civilians in the Bonsai Art Garden next to the hill, former U.S. President Bill Clinton delivered an environmental speech on the lawn in front of Camel Hill. While speaking, he humorously referred to a Guilin folding fan he was waving as an "energy-saving air conditioner."
