For many railway enthusiasts around the world, riding a sleeper train in Japan is surely a dreamlike rail experience. Now, aside from the legendary Hokutosei, Twilight Express, and the luxurious Cassiopeia, Japan’s sleeper train lineup will welcome a new luxury train member — the Seven Stars in Kyushu, which is scheduled to officially set sail on October 15.

Japan’s newest luxury sleeper train, “The Seven Stars in Kyushu,” is set to debut on October 15. Its exterior is currently covered in black paint, with the actual design to be unveiled at the official launch. (Image source / from www.kobe-np.co.jp)

The Seven Stars in Kyushu was built with an investment of 3 billion yen (over NT$900 million). The carriages feature a retro-luxurious blend of Japanese and Western styles, using wood and carpet. The train includes first-class, business-class, and lounge cars. The lounge car is equipped with a bar, where passengers can relax on sofas and swivel seats while gazing out of the large windows at the scenic views, all accompanied by live piano music. As for the name “Seven Stars in Kyushu,” it represents both the seven prefectures of Kyushu — Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Miyazaki, Kumamoto, Nagasaki, and Oita — as well as the seven key tourism assets of Kyushu: nature, hot springs, cuisine, local hospitality, history and culture, power spots, and trains. It also symbolizes the train’s seven carriages.

The Seven Stars in Kyushu currently offers one 4-day/3-night and one 2-day/1-night itinerary per week. The former is priced between NT$115,000 and NT$170,000, while the latter ranges from approximately NT$46,000 to NT$67,000.
