In Taiwan, there are old train stations like “Zhuifen,” “Chenggong,” “Yongkang,” and “Bao’an” famous for their auspicious ticket phrases. In Obihiro City, Hokkaido, there’s also an old station named “Kōfuku (Happiness),” which is highly favored by couples and a popular destination for travel and wedding photography, thus earning the nickname “Lovers’ Sacred Site.” However, after Kōfuku Station was closed in 1987, its platform and part of the tracks were preserved. Over the years, the interior and exterior walls of the station building have been covered with postcards from visitors and couples praying for happiness.

Kōfuku Station and the nearby Aikoku Station in Obihiro City, Hokkaido, became wildly popular in 1973 due to a Japanese NHK travel program. The following year, singer Serina Hayashi’s song “From the Land of Love to Happiness” (A Love Country to Happiness) sparked a buying frenzy for the auspicious “Aikoku–Kōfuku” ticket phrase, with over 10 million sold within four years. However, after enduring 50 years of wear and tear, Kōfuku Station began renovation work earlier this month, with completion scheduled for early November. When the renovation news was released, it attracted tourists from all over Japan who came to see the old station one last time in its original form. Netizens planning to visit Hokkaido after early November will have the chance to see the newly renovated Kōfuku Station.
