Wei Baqun Memorial Hall

The Wei Baqun Memorial Hall is a cultural relic protection unit of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a classic red tourism site, and a patriotic education base.

The Wei Baqun Memorial Hall in Donglan County is located at the foot of Gengnao Mountain in the northwest of Donglan County, Hechi City.

The memorial hall mainly consists of Baqun Square and the memorial building. It was completed in October 2009, covering an area of 120 mu with a construction area of 7,200 square meters. The three-story memorial hall is 28 meters high, 129 meters long, and 71 meters wide. The interior features seven exhibition halls and various multi-functional rooms. The exhibition area spans 3,500 square meters, displaying over 1,000 cultural relics and historical materials. The first floor includes a foyer, a theater hall, and three exhibition halls. The foyer houses a half-length white marble statue of Wei Baqun, with an inscription on the base featuring historical evaluations of Wei Baqun by central and national leaders. Surrounding the foyer are the theater hall, a temporary exhibition hall, and the first, second, and third exhibition halls. These three halls respectively introduce Wei Baqun’s concern for the nation and its people, his pursuit of truth; his leadership in the peasant movement and armed struggle; and his participation in leading the Baise Uprising and organizing the establishment of the Right River Soviet Area. Currently, the temporary exhibition hall mainly displays inscriptions by a hundred generals in commemoration of Wei Baqun. The second floor of the memorial hall has four exhibition halls that introduce Deng Xiaoping and Wei Baqun; Wei Baqun’s loyalty to the Party and his defense of the Soviet Area; the heroic struggles of countless revolutionary martyrs who carried on after Wei Baqun’s sacrifice, keeping the revolutionary flag flying; and eternal commemoration as well as the immortal monument. The memorial hall makes full use of sound, light, electricity, multimedia, holographic imaging, virtual reality, murals, sculptures, oil paintings, and scene reconstructions to recreate historical events authentically. It highlights Wei Baqun’s outstanding contributions to the founding of New China and the great achievements of leaders such as Deng Xiaoping and Zhang Yunyi in the revolution of the Youjiang and Zuojiang regions. It also showcases how revolutionary martyrs sacrificed their lives and shed blood, charging fearlessly and heroically fighting, composing a magnificent chapter of the national democratic revolution with their lives and blood.

In the southern part of the central axis of Baqun Square, the Generals’ Park features bronze statues of 17 figures including Wei Baqun, Zhang Yunyi, Chen Hongtao, Huang Daquan, Lu Haoren, Huang Fangri, Huang Juping, --, Wei Jie, Qin Jian, Qin Shimian, Wei Zuozhen, Qin Guohan, Jiang Maosheng, Huang Songjian, Qin Yingji, and Lu Xiuxuan, along with displays of their biographies.

The establishment of the Wei Baqun Memorial Hall aims to promote the spirit of Baqun and educate and inspire future generations. Baqun Square is an important component of the memorial hall, covering an area of 60 mu. The design layout connects the Generals’ Park, Merit Park, Inscription Park, -- Square, and the Wei Baqun Memorial Hall organically through a central axis. The center of the square is paved with patterns of bronze drums and Zhuang brocade, surrounded by 12 totem pillars topped with double-sided bronze drums. The drums have a diameter of 1.8 meters and a waist length of 1.6 meters. The drums are engraved with the text: “Commemorating the 115th Anniversary of Wei Baqun’s Birth, November 5, 2009, Made in Donglan.” This gives the square a strong local cultural character. The Generals’ Park is located in the southern part of the central axis of Baqun Square, covering an area of 30 mu. The design adopts an irregular naturalistic garden style, integrating rock arrangements with plant shapes, wooden rest pavilions, and smooth garden paths to create an elegant natural-style garden.

The Wei Baqun Memorial Hall was designated as a key cultural relic protection unit of the autonomous region in 2009 and was announced as a Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Patriotic Education Base in December 2010.
