Ancient Building Complex of Yangshan Village
The ancient building complex of Yangshan Village is a cultural relic protection unit of Hunan Province.
Yangshan Village is located in Zhenghe Township, Guiyang County, about 30 kilometers from the city. It forms a golden tourism triangle with Wanhuayan and Yangtianhu via high-grade roads and the Chen-Yang Highway. The village gets its name from its location against Qitian Mountain (historically known as Yangshan). Surrounded by green hills and crisscrossed by clear streams, it resembles the idyllic realm described in "The Peach Blossom Spring." Since the migration of its founding ancestors in the early Ming Dynasty, descendants have thrived and lived together as a clan for over 600 years. The village was initially built during the Hongzhi era (1497) of the Ming Dynasty, took shape during the flourishing Kangxi–Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, and reached its peak in the Daoguang era. Covering an area of over ten thousand square meters, it now preserves more than 60 ancient buildings, totaling about five thousand square meters.
The village faces south with its back to the north, with houses built against the mountain and nestled beside the water. A stream runs through the entire settlement, referred to as being “embraced by a golden belt.” The houses feature rigorous structures, well-spaced layouts, upturned eaves, and exquisitely carved beams and painted rafters. Ingenious solutions were applied in ventilation, lighting, drainage, and fire prevention. The colorful paintings on walls and eaves, along with delicate wood and stone carvings, are refined, elegant, and lifelike, having withstood centuries of vicissitude without ruin—an exceptionally rare sight. The layout of the village emphasizes harmony between heaven, earth, and humanity, while its structure reflects the Confucian ideal of balance and moderation—representing a perfect fusion of folk culture and architecture.
Descendants of the He family migrated from Lujiang Commandery. They valued literature and martial arts, emphasized ethics, sought harmony, understood principles and justice, and engaged in farming. Over the years, the clan produced over ten individuals who achieved the status of jinshi (advanced scholars) or juren (provincial graduates), and many held official positions as military generals or Hanlin scholars. Without flaunting their status as a prominent family, they helped the weak and supported the poor, voluntarily establishing community organizations such as the “Chongyanghui (Respect-for-the-Elderly Society),” “Yixuehui (Scholarship-Supporting Society),” “Nüerhui (Girls’ Support Society),” and “Jinjiehui (Self-Discipline Society),” forming a century-old family ethos of “tolerance, sincerity, integrity, and virtue bringing peace and prosperity”—a “living fossil” of ancient Chinese folk customs.
Currently, the main attractions of Yangshan Village include over ten sites such as ancient residential clusters, primeval secondary forests, ancient post roads and bridges, Ming and Qing dynasty tombs, ancient battlefields of the Taiping Rebellion, alpine meadows, and natural caves.
