Yangshan Ancient Village

The Yangshan Ancient Village Scenic Area is located in Zhenghe Township, Guiyang County, approximately 30 kilometers from downtown Chenzhou and 15 kilometers from Guiyang County.

The Yangshan Ancient Village Scenic Area is embraced by verdant mountains and adorned with graceful waters, resembling the utopian landscape depicted in “The Peach Blossom Spring.” With a history of nearly 600 years since the settlement of its founding ancestors in 1497, the ancient residential complex spans 15,000 square meters and preserves 80 well-maintained historic buildings. The village faces south with its back to the north, built against the mountains and beside the water, with a stream running through it — known as the “golden belt embrace.” The layout emphasizes harmony among “heaven, earth, and humanity,” while its structure reflects the Confucian ideal of “balance and harmony,” representing a perfect fusion of folk culture and architecture.

The He clan of Yangshan Village migrated from Lujiang Commandery. They valued literature and martial arts, pursued harmony, upheld etiquette, and engaged in farming. The clan produced over ten individuals who achieved the status of Jinshi (advanced scholars) or Juren (provincial degree holders), with several attaining the rank of general or entering the Hanlin Academy. Despite their distinguished lineage, they were humble, helping the weak and aiding the poor. They voluntarily established six community organizations known as the “Six Associations” for village governance: the “Chongyang Association” (for respecting the elderly), the “Yixue Association” (for supporting education), the “Jiuying Association” (for protecting infants), the “Jinjie Association” (for self-discipline), the “Zongyuan Association” (for ancestor worship), and the “Nü’er Association” (for women’s rights). These fostered a century-old family ethos of “tolerance, sincerity, integrity, and virtue, bringing peace and prosperity through harmony,” making it a “living fossil” of ancient Chinese folk customs.
