Tomb of Chen Shijie

The Tomb of Chen Shijie is a cultural heritage protection unit in Hunan Province.

The Tomb of Chen Shijie is located in Goulou Township, Hengyang County, Hengyang City, dating back to the Qing Dynasty.

In 2019, the Tomb of Chen Shijie was approved as part of the tenth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage protection units in Hunan Province.

Chen Shijie

(1825-1893)

Governor-general during the Qing Dynasty.

A native of Guiyang Prefecture, Qing Dynasty (now Guiyang County). His courtesy name was Juncheng. He was born in 1825 in the fifth year of the Daoguang reign. In his early years, he studied at Yuelu Academy in Changsha. In the 29th year of Daoguang (1849), he was selected as a seventh-rank official in the Ministry of Revenue through the examination for recommended scholars. In the first year of the Xianfeng reign (1851), he returned home due to his father’s death. The following year, he led local militia to suppress the uprisings led by Li Mingxian and Li Guanlong in the county.

In early 1853, Chen Shijie joined Zeng Guofan’s military staff in Hengzhou. At the time, Bao Chao was sentenced to death for breaking military law, and Wang Xinxin was trapped in a city due to disobeying orders.
