Anxiang Huangshantou
Huangshantou is 33 kilometers from Anxiang County and borders Huangshantou Town of Gong’an County in Hubei Province. It lies to the west of the Songzi River, east of the Hudu River, north against the Yangtze River, and south facing Dongting Lake. The area features 32 large and small peaks, with the main peak rising 268.8 meters above sea level. Huangshantou enjoys the reputation of “a solitary beauty amid thousands of miles of flat land.” To the north lies Lai’s Lake, to the south is Donghu’ao, to the west is Mingtang Lake, and to the east is Huangtian Lake. Since ancient times, it has been praised as “a golden mountain amidst silver lakes and emerald fields.” A friendly delegation from Toyota, Japan, described Huangshantou as “a bright pearl on thousands of miles of plains.”
The Huangshantou Tourist Area features a mid-subtropical northern fringe monsoon humid climate with distinct seasons. On the southeastern slope of the main peak, the terrain is steep with more exposed rocks. The forest vegetation mainly includes pine, fir, sassafras, camphor, sweet gum, metasequoia, dawn redwood, as well as bamboo species and various trees from the Magnoliaceae family. There are over 160 animal species, including more than 30 amphibian and reptile species, and over 100 bird species.
Huangshantou enjoys highly convenient water and land transportation. Waterways via the Hudu River and Songzi River connect to the Yangtze River and lead into Dongting Lake. Downstream vessels can reach Wuhan, Nanjing, and Shanghai, while upstream routes go as far as Yichang, through the Three Gorges all the way to Chongqing. The land routes are also well-connected in all directions. Huangshantou has been a destination for literati and travelers throughout the ages. As early as the Jin Dynasty, over 1,600 years ago, temples stood atop the mountain, attracting numerous worshippers. Moreover, thanks to Huangshantou’s quintessential Jiangnan plains scenery, countless scholars, beauties, heroes, and notables have visited over the dynasties. Qu Yuan of the Warring States period, Shen Yue of the Liang Dynasty, Liu Zongyuan of the Tang Dynasty, Fan Chengda of the Song Dynasty, Yuan Zongdao of the Ming Dynasty, and Tao Shu of the Qing Dynasty all traveled here and left timeless masterpieces. Yan Gengdao of the Yuan Dynasty, Wu Zongru of the Ming Dynasty, Zhao Chunweng and Pan Xiang of the Qing Dynasty all composed “Odes to Huangshan.” Wang Shichang of the Ming Dynasty, who stayed overnight at Huangshan, wrote: “The distant bell rings low, voices across the stream veiled in mist; my bed is set with clouds as company, I boil tea and drink by night springs; tonight the Milky Way feels near, making me forget I’m not a celestial being.”
Proletarian revolutionaries such as Peng Dehuai and He Long once engaged in revolutionary activities here in their early years, and Huangshantou is also one of the revolutionary base areas.
