Golden Whip Rock

Golden Whip Rock is an iconic attraction in the Golden Whip Stream scenic area of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Standing over 380 meters tall, the rock formation is slender at the top and thick at the base, with distinct four edges. It rises abruptly from the ground and soars straight into the sky, resembling a long whip piercing the heavens from every angle. That’s why this valley is also called the Golden Whip Stream Grand Canyon.

When the sun sets, the rock glows golden and sparkles brilliantly, forming a spectacular and breathtaking scene known as the “Golden Whip at Sunset.” On the left side of Golden Whip Rock stands a peak that resembles a fierce eagle with a hooked beak, wide eyes, and slightly spread wings, vigilantly guarding the rock — hence the name “Divine Eagle Guarding the Whip.” Legend has it that Emperor Qin Shi Huang once wielded a whip to drive mountains into the sea but left his golden whip here, where it turned into the rock. The Yongding County Annals from the Qing Dynasty’s Qianlong era described it as “piercing the sky, gleaming in sunlight and snow, and offering the most extraordinary spectacle.”

Transportation:

After entering Zhangjiajie National Forest Park through the “Forest Park Ticket Entrance,” walk about 500 meters to reach the entrance of the Golden Whip Stream canyon. It is accessible by walking along Golden Whip Stream.
