Zhangjiajie Guigudong Cave

Guigudong Cave is located within the Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park in Zhangjiajie City and is one of the sixteen caves of Tianmen Mountain. It hangs on a cliff on the western line of the mountain’s summit. The cave is named after the renowned strategist Guiguzi, who, according to legend, once lived and practiced his skills here.

The entrance of Guigudong Cave is square-shaped, and its location is extremely perilous — over 100 meters above the mountain’s summit and right above a deep chasm. This area is rarely visited throughout the year, and the only way to descend into the cave is by rope. Everything inside the cave has remained a mystery. A crew from CCTV’s documentary series "Geography of China" once ventured deep into Guigudong Cave and discovered several small caves as well as a large number of undeveloped stalactites. Additionally, there were two major findings: first, there were clear signs of human habitation inside the cave, including stone stoves and resting platforms; second, there was an irregularly shaped “stone mural” on one of the cave walls.

Due to the dangerous location of Guigudong Cave, visitors cannot enter but can only view it from the 300-meter-away Guandong Platform or overlook it from the cave exploration spot at the mountain’s summit. There are trees at the cave entrance, with red silk ribbons hung on them by visitors.

Tianmen Mountain Scenic Area Opening Hours: Peak season (March 1 – November 30): 8:00–18:00 (tickets stop being sold at 16:30); Off-season (December 1 – February 28 of the following year): 8:30–18:00 (tickets stop being sold at 16:00).

Take the Tianmen Mountain Cable Car to the upper station, then walk along the Guigu Plank Road to see the cave.
