Tao Zhu's Former Residence
Tao Zhu's Former Residence is a cultural relic protection unit of Hunan Province, a classic red tourism attraction, and a patriotic education base.
Tao Zhu's Former Residence is located on a mountainside in Taojiawan Village, Panshi Town, Qiyang County, Yongzhou City.
On January 16, 1908, Tao Zhu was born here. In 1926, he entered the fifth term of the Whampoa Military Academy in Guangzhou and joined the Communist Party of China the same year. He participated in the Nanchang Uprising and the Guangzhou Uprising in 1927, and returned to Qiyang in 1928 to engage in underground party work. In 1929, he went to Fujian, where he successively served as the Secretary-General and then Secretary of the Fujian Provincial Committee of the CPC, Secretary of the Zhangzhou Special Committee, Head of the Organization Department of the Provincial Committee, and Secretary of the Fuzhou Central Municipal Committee. He organized the Minnan Red Army Guerrilla Corps and the People’s Armed Forces in eastern Fujian, and successfully led and commanded the sensational Xiamen Prison Break Operation nationwide. In May 1933, he was arrested and imprisoned, but was rescued in 1937 by Zhou Enlai and Ye Jianying. He was then sent to Hubei Province to serve as a member of the Provincial Committee and head of the Propaganda Department, as well as acting political commissar of the Yu’e Advance Detachment, where he established the anti-Japanese guerrilla forces and zones in central Hubei.
During the Liberation War period, Tao Zhu successively served as Secretary of the Provincial Committees of Liaoning, Liaojii, and Liaobei, and as Deputy Director of the Political Department of the Fourth Field Army. Entrusted by the CPC Central Committee, he negotiated with Fu Zuoyi and Cheng Qian, playing a significant role in the peaceful liberation of Beiping and Hunan.
During the period of socialist revolution and construction, Tao Zhu held positions including Governor and Secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Committee, First Secretary of the Central-South Bureau, Vice Premier of the State Council, and Standing Committee Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee. During the Cultural Revolution, he assisted Zhou Enlai in handling the daily affairs of the Party and the state, and firmly opposed Lin Biao and the Gang of Four. On November 30, 1969, he was persecuted to death by Lin Biao and the Gang of Four. After the Gang of Four was crushed, the CPC Central Committee fully rehabilitated him, and a grand memorial service was held on December 24, 1978. Chen Yun delivered a eulogy on behalf of the Party Central Committee, giving high praise to Tao Zhu’s life.
Tao Zhu's Former Residence covers an area of about 120 square meters, with a total of five rooms built by Tao Zhu’s ancestors. It is surrounded by mountains, enjoys a pleasant climate, and has a serene environment.
In January 1988, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Tao Zhu’s birth, Tao Gong Pavilion was built 100 meters below the residence, standing about 6 meters tall. In 1998, to mark the 90th anniversary of his birth, the Tao Zhu Life and Deeds Exhibition Room was established about 100 meters below Tao Gong Pavilion. The exhibits mainly consist of replicas from the Tao Zhu Life and Deeds Exhibition at Wuxi Park, totaling around 310 items.
