The Yang Clan Ancestral Hall in Panshi is a cultural relic protection unit of Hunan Province.

The Yang Clan Ancestral Hall is situated in Ceshuping Village, Panshi Town. Constructed in the 48th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1783), it is a religious and ceremonial building that has withstood the test of time, retaining the architectural style and historical-cultural essence of the Ming and Qing dynasties. As a historical and cultural heritage, it embodies combined values in architecture, history, science, and art. Since the Qing Dynasty, the Yang Clan Ancestral Hall has played a significant role in promoting education, reflecting the local community's reverence for knowledge and culture. It not only carries rich information about the evolution of human history and folk customs but also upholds the beliefs and hopes of a locality and even an entire ethnic group in preserving cultural traditions. Moreover, it witnessed the pivotal historic event of the abolition of the imperial examination system, making it highly valuable for studying the transformation of China’s educational system from the late Qing Dynasty to the contemporary era. Throughout its years as an educational institution, the Yang Clan Ancestral Hall nurtured a large number of distinguished individuals, with many being admitted to prestigious universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, and pursuing studies abroad. Among them, Professor Yang Zhixing of Tsinghua University stands out as a notable alumnus. Architecturally, the Yang Clan Ancestral Hall showcases exceptional craftsmanship and refined aesthetic taste. Its undulating, upward-curving horse-head walls not only serve the practical function of fire and wind prevention but also symbolize the clan’s aspirations for success. The grey brick gables, dark gray roof tiles, and whitewashed wall decorations create, from a distance, the elegant appearance of a traditional ink-wash painting, exuding a refined scholarly charm. The colorful historical figure sculptures on the gate tower wall are exquisitely crafted, the caisson ceiling at the center of the ancestral hall is simple yet dignified, the landscape and floral-bird murals on the walls are ornate and tasteful, and the carved auspicious beasts on the beams are vividly lifelike. These decorative elements not only demonstrate outstanding architectural ingenuity but also highlight the hall’s nobility and grandeur. With its grand scale, ingenious layout, rigorous structure, exquisite sculptures, beautiful paintings, and profound symbolism, the Yang Clan Ancestral Hall is a rare, fully functional ancient ancestral hall building in Hunan Province.

In 2019, the Yang Clan Ancestral Hall in Panshi was approved as part of the tenth batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units in Hunan Province.

Ceshuping Village: 【Ceshuping】 Ｃèｓｈùｐíｎｇ

In the past, the area beside the Yang Clan Ancestral Hall was covered with ancient trees, which were all cut down in 1958, leaving a flat ground—hence the name “Ceshuping” (Flat beside the Trees). The village committee is based in Ceshuping and governs six villager groups: Aoyutou, Ceshuping, Sifangyuan, Shizitang, Datangjiao, and Zhangmutang. The total area is 0.4 square kilometers, with 13.7 hectares of arable land, 139 households, and a population of 440.
