Stele Corridor of Furong Tower

The Stele Corridor of Furong Tower is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Furong Tower preserves a total of 128 ancient stone stelae, making it the site in Hunan Province with the largest number and highest quality of ancient stelae.

The inscriptions at Furong Tower represent the essence of the cultural heritage of Qianyang Ancient City. They mainly come from two sources: first, the stelae at the tower itself, including poetic steles created during literary gatherings, steles commemorating the restoration of the tower, and ancient calligraphy works by master calligraphers engraved at Furong Tower; second, Qing Dynasty government notices and commemorative stelae collected from the ancient city by cultural heritage authorities.

The corridor is divided into two sides. One side features poetic and calligraphy stelae, including running script by Tian Mingyu, teacher of Shen Congwen; the “Final Words at Xupu Field Headquarters” by Zhou Zefan, a military warlord of Western Hunan; character steles by Wang Jixian, a renowned Qing Dynasty calligrapher and native of Changpo in Qiancheng; character steles by Zhao Mengfu, a great Yuan Dynasty calligrapher; character steles by Yue Fei, a patriotic general of the Song Dynasty; as well as works by Huang Tingjian and Mi Fu, great calligraphers of the Northern Song Dynasty, and Yan Zhenqing, a great calligrapher of the Tang Dynasty.

The “Ancient Longbiao Mountain” stele was inscribed by Yuan Shuxian, an educational official of Qianyang County, in the 35th year of the Qianlong reign (1770, Gengzi), and recarved in the 23rd year of the Daoguang reign (1843, Guimao).

The other side of the corridor mostly features commemorative stelae. The first two are steles commemorating the restoration of Furong Tower, while others include anti-Japanese war slogan stelae, Qing Dynasty shrine and temple stelae, and government notices. These have high value for research on the politics, economy, history, and culture of Qianyang County.

Qiancheng Town: Located in the southwestern part of Hongjiang City, Qiancheng Town is now the seat of the new Hongjiang municipal government and the location of the city administration. Qiancheng has a long history — from its establishment as a county in the early Western Han Dynasty until 1949, it served continuously as the county seat. In 1998, Qianyang County and Hongjiang City merged to form the new Hongjiang City, with the new municipal government headquartered in Qiancheng Town. In December 2004, the new Hongjiang municipal government moved to Qiancheng Town, and by 2012 all departments had relocated there. Since then, Qiancheng has regained its status as a county seat.
