In the later period of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, Tongcheng was under the territory of the Southern Tang, with its western and southern borders adjacent to the Later Zhou. To the west stood the Yanmen Pass, located in Yanmen Village, Beigang Town, bordering Yueyang in Hunan; the Baoding Pass, situated in Siquan Village, Magang Town, also bordering Yueyang, Hunan; and to the south was the Tianyue Pass, located in the Huanglong Forest Farm, bordering Pingjiang in Hunan. In February 956, Wang Kui, commander of the Later Zhou’s southern campaign and concurrently the Minister of the Central Secretariat, led troops from Yuezhou to attack the Southern Tang. They bypassed the Yanmen and Baoding Passes and launched a surprise attack on the most treacherously located Tianyue Pass, annihilating over 3,000 Southern Tang defenders.

The three passes were renovated during the Xianfeng era and remain relatively intact. The Yanmen Pass was

damaged in the July 1995

flood, but was restored by a villager named Yuan Jine, who donated ten thousand yuan for its repair.
