Triangle Mountain National Forest Park
Triangle Mountain National Forest Park is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a national forest park.
Xishui County’s Triangle Mountain National Forest Park is situated at the southern foot of the renowned Dabie Mountain Range, in the eastern part of Xishui County, Hubei Province — the hometown of the Northern Song Dynasty famous physician Chong Anshi, Qing Dynasty top imperial scholar Chen Hang, and modern renowned poet, scholar, and democratic fighter Wen Yiduo. It is a national AAA-level tourist attraction and a patriotic education base in Huanggang City. Triangle Mountain is one of the famous mountains in eastern Hubei, often referred to as the “Brush Stand Mountain” of Huangzhou Prefecture. Known for its grandeur, uniqueness, and beauty, it covers an area of 60 square kilometers, featuring 28 small to medium-sized peaks, with the main peak reaching an elevation of 1,055 meters, making it the highest mountain in Xishui. The area boasts undulating mountains, steep and precipitous terrain, spectacular peaks, unique caves, rugged rocks, beautiful scenery, lush forests, and a pleasant climate, with summer temperatures peaking between 26°C and 28°C. There are 156 scenic spots and historical sites, including cultural relics and revolutionary memorial landmarks, making it an ideal destination for tourism, summer retreats, leisure, and recuperation.
Triangle Mountain is rich in cultural heritage, features extraordinary natural landscapes, and is home to numerous beautiful and moving legends. Historical figures such as Li Bai, Du Fu, Su Dongpo, Ouyang Xiu, Yang Liulang, Lu Yu, Li Shizhen, Wu Cheng’en, Chen Hang, and Zheng Banqiao have all visited this mountain — either to compose poetry about its views, inscribe literary works, hike to high vantage points, pay homage to Buddhism, explore ancient wonders, or seek out historical curiosities. They left behind a splendid array of cultural landmarks, many of which remain etched on the cliffs and rock faces to this day. The “Triangle Mountain Cliff Carvings” have been designated as a provincial-level cultural relic protection site. The renowned attraction “Brush Stand Waterfall” is spectacular and unique, and has been included in the “Chinese Scenic Spots Dictionary.” “Triangle Cloud Clearing” is listed as one of the Eight Scenic Views of Xishui in Huangzhou Prefecture. “Bai Fu Fort” is the site where Li Bai and Du Fu drank wine and composed poetry, with remnants still existing today. “Xiling Cliff” bears handwritten inscriptions by Su Dongpo and Zheng Banqiao. “Herb-Gathering Rock” and “Tiger-Healing Gully” are places where Li Shizhen once collected medicinal herbs. “Six-One Ascent” is said to be the stone carving left by Ouyang Xiu during his later years when he climbed Triangle Mountain. During his tenure as an official in Huangzhou, the famous novelist Wu Cheng’en visited this mountain while serving as a “Jingfu Shi” (moral instructor) at the Qizhou Jing Prince’s Mansion, drawing inspiration for writing his classic ancient mythological novel “Journey to the West.” Other notable visitors include Ming Dynasty literary figure and Magistrate of Meizhou, Sichuan, Chen Renjin; Qing Dynasty third-place imperial scholar, Shanghai Daoist Official, Governor of Liangjiang, Chen Luan; Taiwan’s first Daoist Official, Chen Maolie; Qing Dynasty Magistrate of Huangzhou, Liang Wenbo; the keeper of the Heavenly King’s Palace in the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and renowned humorous figure of eastern Hubei, Chen Yangzhan; and the Speaker of the House of Representatives during the Beijing Government of the Republic of China, Tang Hualong. All have left behind significant literary or historical legacies.
Triangle Mountain’s natural stone caves are captivating. On the southeast side of the main peak lies the Old Dragon Cave. The cave entrance is horizontal, inscribed with the words “Pine Knots the Dragon’s Source,” while the exit is vertical, engraved with “Dragon’s Saliva.” The cave contains three springs, amidst which mist and clouds frequently emerge and vanish, leading locals to use these signs to predict weather changes. Surprisingly, the water in the dragon cave rises twice a day — at midnight (zi hour) and noon (wu hour) — similar to ocean tides, hence it is called the “Zi-Wu Spring.” During these tidal surges, foam mixed with fragments of reeds overflows from the spring, adding to the cave’s mysterious allure.
Triangle Mountain is abundant in religious resources and is home to many places of worship, making it a sacred destination for pilgrims and visitors seeking spiritual enlightenment. Renowned temples and ancient mountains complement each other beautifully. Among them, the most famous are Ziyun Chan Temple, Jinlun Temple, and Longdong Temple, which serve as important religious centers in eastern Hubei. Ziyun Chan Temple was originally built in the third year of the Zhenguan era of Emperor Taizong of Tang (630 AD), boasting a history of 1,370 years. Legend has it that when the founding monk first arrived, purple clouds encircled the mountain peaks, hence the name “Purple Cloud Temple.” Longdong Temple is located west of Old Dragon Cave and was first built during the Song Dynasty. It is said that when the temple was established, while the founding abbot was lecturing, a pair of stone shoots emerged from the ground and gradually disappeared — believed to be the divine dragon listening to the sermon. Since then, Longdong Temple gained widespread fame. In addition, there are other religious sites such as Baizhi Nunnery, Tianran Nunnery, Cigu Hall, Wufeng Nunnery, Guanyin Pavilion, and Qingfeng Cottage. Historical records indicate that during its peak, Triangle Mountain hosted “eight hundred Taoists, three thousand monks, worshippers as numerous as pilgrims, and pilgrims bustling like a marketplace.”
