Zhengzhou Zoo is located in the northern section of Huayuan Road, Jinshui District, Zhengzhou City, covering an area of 430 acres. It is the only specialized zoo in Henan Province. The zoo houses over a hundred species and nearly a thousand animals, including precious protected species such as the Northeast tiger and the leopard. Other animals include African elephants, Asian elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees, white storks, crowned cranes, flat-headed monkeys, crab-eating macaques, and stump-tailed macaques. Since the park is situated on a plain without natural hills, several artificial hills have been built, along with six large and small artificial lakes interconnected by bridges and culverts. South Lake is a paradise for waterfowl, where mandarin ducks play in pairs and swans glide across the surface. The panda house, hippopotamus house, gorilla house, and elephant enclosure, designed and built in the 1980s, feature novel and unique designs that double as both functional buildings and scenic spots. Many enclosures include indoor and outdoor exhibition areas, allowing visitors to enjoy the animals year-round.

Although Zhengzhou Zoo is built on a plain without natural hills or ridges, the man-made hills constructed along the lake, such as Pine Hill, Persimmon Hill, and Osmanthus Hill, offer green mountains, clear waters, serene lakeshores, lush green lawns, fragrant lotus flowers, elegant pavilions, and vivid sculptures, creating a scenery that is endlessly fresh and enchanting.

There are six large and small artificial lakes irregularly distributed across the zoo, interconnected by bridges and culverts. South Lake is a haven for waterfowl, where mandarin ducks play in pairs and swans swim gracefully. The beautiful scenery captivates visitors and makes them reluctant to leave.

To allow visitors in the Central Plains region to see some rare animals, Zhengzhou Zoo not only focuses on successful animal breeding but also actively introduces rare wildlife suited to the local climate. Among the over a hundred species and nearly a thousand animals, protected species include the Northeast tiger, leopard, bears, Bactrian camels, sika deer, hippopotamuses, baboons, cranes, and pheasants such as the Lady Amherst's pheasant. These animals are not only well-tamed but also successfully bred through advanced artificial breeding techniques, helping to expand the zoo’s collection and support other zoos. Additionally, African elephants, Asian elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees, white storks, crowned cranes, flat-headed monkeys, crab-eating macaques, stump-tailed macaques, and various waterfowl also live here peacefully, breeding and thriving.

The panda house, hippopotamus house, gorilla house, and elephant enclosure, designed and built in the 1980s, feature novel and unique designs that double as both functional buildings and scenic spots. Many enclosures include indoor and outdoor exhibition areas, allowing visitors to enjoy the animals year-round. With an investment of nearly 3 million yuan and covering 60 acres, a wildlife safari park where visitors can observe animals via cable car has been completed—this is currently the only one of its kind in inland cities in China.
