Sanmenxia Museum

The Sanmenxia City Museum is located in the Shanzhou Scenic Area in the western part of the city, north of the Pagoda of Baolun Temple. It is a comprehensive museum built in November 1989 with a donation of 2 million yuan from Japanese friend Mr. Ishikawa Ichiro. Covering an area of 44,000 square meters, with a building area of 3,200 square meters, its overall architectural style is characterized by gardens within the museum and a museum within the gardens — simple and dignified, yet elegant and refined.

The museum primarily houses historical relics unearthed in the Sanmenxia region and natural resource specimens, showcasing the area’s splendid cultural heritage and abundant resources from ancient times to the present. It also hosts various types of exhibitions that reflect the city’s development achievements, the simple and honest folk customs of western Henan, as well as the historical overview of efforts to control, develop, and utilize the Yellow River — from the legendary Yu the Great’s flood control to modern initiatives.
