Xiping Gengzhuang Site

The Xiping Gengzhuang Site is a cultural heritage protection unit of Henan Province.

The Gengzhuang Site is located to the east of Geng Group, Shuhepo Village Committee, Zhongqu Township, Xiping County, bordered by a road to the north, Gengzhuang Village to the west, and Guozhuang Village to the east.

The site spans approximately 250 meters from east to west and 190 meters from north to south, covering an area of nearly 50,000 square meters. It features a terraced terrain, with the highest point reaching about 1.8 meters. Observations from the eastern and southern sections of the site reveal that the upper 20 centimeters consist of agricultural soil, while the lower cultural layer is over 2.5 meters thick and relatively undisturbed. Most of the remains are ash pits, which come in four shapes: oval, round, bag-shaped, and pot-bottom shaped, typically with a depth of 1.2 meters. Cultural artifacts collected from the site include stone and pottery items. Stone tools comprise axes, adzes, knives, spades, chisels, and arrowheads, while pottery items include tripods, jars, basins, bean pots, bowls, ring-footed plates, goblet-shaped vessels, steamers, and spinning whorls. The pottery is predominantly sandy clay, followed by clayey pottery; in terms of color, gray pottery is most common, followed by black pottery and a small amount of brown pottery. The decorative patterns on the pottery fragments are mainly cord-marked, followed by checkered and plain designs, with fewer spiral and appliqué patterns. The Gengzhuang Site contains cultural remains from the early, middle, and late periods of the Longshan Culture. With abundant relics and artifacts, it is an important cultural site in southern Henan and holds significant academic value. It is currently well-preserved. In 1986, it was designated as part of the second batch of cultural heritage protection units in Henan Province.
