Lianping Eagle Beak Honey Peach
Eagle Beak Honey PeachWith a long history, human activity in the area dates back to the Neolithic Age. Lianping produces a variety of fruits. According to the Records of Lianping Prefecture, as early as the Ming Dynasty, peaches, plums, and other fruits were grown here, indicating that Lianping has a peach-growing history of over 400 years. Locals are very fond of peaches, and a Hakka folk song circulating in the area goes: “Eating peaches fills you up, eating plums makes you weak (pronounced 'Sui,' meaning to cause bodily decline), and eating bayberries makes you cry all the way home.” In rural areas, almost every household plants a few peach trees in their front yards or behind their homes. However, these native original peaches are small eagle beak types—small in size, with little edible flesh, low sweetness, darker skin color, and due to inconsistent cultivation techniques, the quality of the peaches varies greatly. By the early 1980s, some villagers in Shangping Town of Lianping County began attempting to improve the local peach varieties. Through careful cultivation and selective breeding, the quality of the peaches was enhanced.
