Xiaomengzhuang Site
The Xiaomengzhuang Site is a protected cultural heritage site under the jurisdiction of Henan Province.
The Xiaomengzhuang Site is located south of Xiaomengzhuang Village in Shiling Town, Xiping County. Part of the site is overlaid by the village. It lies about 20 kilometers from downtown Xiping, adjacent to the ancient city of Xiping to the north and the low-lying Yangzhuang Flood Detention Area to the south. The elevation is 75.7 meters. The terrain is higher in the north and lower in the south, with the highest point in the northern section rising approximately 3 meters above the surrounding ground.
Based on the pottery fragments and other cultural relics exposed on the surface of the site and those discovered by local farmers during digging, artifacts from the Shang and Han dynasties have been identified. Analysis suggests that the site was a settlement during the Shang Dynasty and also contains Han Dynasty tombs.
According to drilling data and the pottery fragments collected from the upper layer of the site, the cultural layer is 0.9 to 1.6 meters thick and can be divided into three strata from top to bottom: The first layer is about 0.4 meters thick, consisting of yellowish-gray soil with loose texture, containing a large amount of red fired earth chunks and ash particles, with occasional pottery fragments; the second layer is gray soil, also loose, with abundant red fired earth and ash particles, ranging from 0.5 to 1.2 meters thick, where drilling revealed significantly more pottery fragments than in the first layer; the third layer is likely the natural subsoil, with yellow-brown soil, firmer texture, granular in composition, located about 1.1 to 1.8 meters below the surface. Judging by the clay type, color, and decorative patterns of the pottery fragments, they belong to both Shang and Han Dynasty cultural remains. Among the Shang Dynasty pottery, the decorative patterns are mainly rope impressions, along with some additional appliqué and spiral motifs; sandy-tempered pottery is more common than clay-tempered pottery; gray pottery dominates, but dark gray, brownish-red, and red pottery have also been found. Identifiable vessel shapes include jars, tripods, and large-mouthed zun vessels. For the Han Dynasty, mainly tile and brick fragments were found, many of which feature full rope impressions on one side.
The Xiaomengzhuang Site is situated at the southern end of the ancient city of Xiping, with the legendary tomb of Leizu, wife of the Yellow Emperor, located to the east. In this area, several shallow earthen mounds stretch from southeast to northwest, scattered on their surfaces with numerous early Shang Dynasty pottery fragments, while their lower sections remain unexplored. Whether the Xiaomengzhuang Site was a settlement from the Yellow Emperor period (Longshan Culture) remains to be uncovered through future research.
The Xiaomengzhuang Site is located on a naturally formed ridge at the northern edge of the Yangzhuang Flood Detention Area. The southern part of the site is farmland cultivated by local farmers, while the northern section is overlaid by the village and thus well-preserved. In 2006, it was designated as part of the fourth batch of cultural heritage protection units by the Henan Provincial People's Government.
