Tongshan Lake in Zhumadian
Tongshan Lake in Zhumadian is a national AAA-level tourist attraction and a national water conservancy scenic area.
The Tongshan Scenic Area is divided into three parts: Tongshan Mountain, Tongshan Lake, and Yunwu Peak, covering a total area of 74 square kilometers with an elevation of 681 meters. The scenic area integrates landscapes such as mountains, lakes, islands, pools and waterfalls, caves, temples, revolutionary sites, myths and legends, and historical stories. It combines the elements of “grandeur, peril, wonder, and beauty,” merging natural and cultural attractions. With “one mountain, one lake, one temple, and one sacred site,” it forms a complete scenic system.
Tongshan Mountain, originally named Dafu Mountain, got its name from the Han Dynasty general Deng Tong who minted coins here. Known as “as perilous as Mount Hua and as beautiful as Mount Huang,” it is also called the “Little Wudang.” The saying “Pay homage to the Golden Summit in the south (Wudang Mountain in Hubei), and visit Tong Peak in the north” has been passed down through the ages. Since the Eastern Han Dynasty, monks and Taoists have come to Tongshan to cultivate themselves and promote Buddhist teachings, creating a rich religious and historical culture. Attractions such as “One Sky Bridge,” “Two Ancient Temples,” “Three Taoist Temples,” “Four Heavenly Gates,” “Five Major Stone Cliffs,” “Six Large Caves,” “Seven Major Temples,” “Eight Major Sceneries,” “Nine Unique Rocks,” and “Ten Famous Peaks” are a feast for the eyes. On the mountain, clouds and mists shroud the steep cliffs; at the foot, deep valleys and dense forests and grasslands abound; the surrounding peaks feature grotesque rocks of breathtaking craftsmanship. Mountain springs, waterfalls, red leaves, strange rocks, rivers, lakes, and temples complement each other, making it a heavenly paradise on earth. Historically, the traditional temple fair held on the 15th day of the sixth lunar month attracted hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from western Anhui, northern Hubei, and southern Henan, turning the trade fair into an unprecedented grand event.
Tongshan Mountain attracts visitors throughout history with its unique lake and mountain scenery, natural beauty, and cultural heritage. Legend has it that Wang Mang and Liu Xiu once fought fiercely here during Wang Mang’s pursuit of Liu Xiu. During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Li Daoyuan, renowned for his work Commentary on the Water Classic, climbed Tongshan several times to investigate the source of the Bi River. Yu Chijingde of the Tang Dynasty visited the mountain and erected a stele in commemoration. Huang Chao, leader of the late Tang peasant uprising, composed poetry here to inspire his troops. In the Zhengde era of the Ming Dynasty, Jiao Fang, who served as Minister of Personnel and Grand Secretary of Huagai Hall, visited the mountain with several scholars and personally wrote the Inscription on the Reconstruction of Tongshan Qingliang Temple. Emperor Shunzhi of the Qing Dynasty became a monk and lived in seclusion at the Qingliang Temple on Tongshan. Successive county magistrates of the Qing Dynasty climbed the peak to enjoy the view and left behind many poems praising Tong Peak.
