The Jiazhuang Site in Biyang

The Jiazhuang Site in Biyang is a cultural relics protection unit of Henan Province.

The Jiazhuang Site is a Neolithic cultural site located 3 kilometers west of Jiazhuang Village, 3 kilometers southeast of Guanzhuang Street, and 20 kilometers north of Biyang County. It is a provincial-level key cultural relics protection unit.

The site is an irregular oval-shaped gentle slope, raised in the middle, with the thickest cultural layer reaching 4.7 meters at the highest point in the center. The site stretches 200 meters from east to west and 180 meters from north to south, covering an area of 36,000 square meters. Based on the stratigraphic superposition and the different artifacts found in the exposed sections, the site can be divided into upper and lower layers. The lower layer mainly contains pottery made of red clay mixed with sand, followed by gray pottery, primarily handmade, including artifacts such as pottery wheels, tall-necked pots, and ring-footed plates. The upper layer is dominated by gray pottery, mainly wheel-made, with artifacts such as ring-footed plates, pottery paddles, pottery wheels, and tripod legs. Other unearthed items include stone axes, chisels, knives, arrowheads, and bone tools. Judging from the shapes and decorations of the pottery in the lower layer, it belongs to the Qujialing culture type, while the upper layer belongs to the Longshan culture type of the Yellow River basin. This site provides valuable physical evidence for the study of the convergence of the Qujialing culture from the Yangtze River basin and the Longshan culture from the Yellow River basin.
