Haituo Valley Tourist Scenic Area

Haituo Valley Tourist Scenic Area is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Haituo Mountain is situated in the southwest of Chicheng County, Hebei Province. It borders Chengde to the east, connects to Zhangjiakou to the west, lies adjacent to Bashang Grassland to the north, and faces Beijing to the south. Covering a total area of 11,224.9 hectares, its main peak, Haituo Mountain, stands at an elevation of 2,241 meters, making it the highest peak north of Beijing. Haituo Mountain is also known as Greater and Lesser He Shan. The story of Wang Cizhong transforming seal script into clerical script and refusing the noble title offered three times by Emperor Qin Shi Huang two thousand years ago took place here.

The area is 130 kilometers from Beijing. Travelers can reach it by passing through Badaling and heading north via Yanqing County. The ridgeline of Haituo Mountain serves as the boundary between Chicheng County and Beijing. The sunny side is home to the Songshan Nature Reserve. Together, the two areas form a majestic green treasure trove rooted in the mountains, combining both yin and yang elements. Like a grand screen standing to the north of the capital, it acts as an important barrier against sandstorms entering Beijing.

The average annual temperature of Haituo Mountain is 13 degrees Celsius lower than that of urban Beijing. From October to June each year, the magical "Haituo Snow-Capped" spectacle may occur. Winter is when the snow scenery of Haituo Mountain is at its most beautiful. Haituo Mountain is renowned for its typical temperate mountain forest ecosystem. With its diverse landscapes and moderately challenging trails, it has become a hub for outdoor sports enthusiasts in the suburbs of Beijing.

Entry to Greater Haituo Mountain costs 25 RMB, while Lesser Haituo Mountain is free.

Transportation

Public transport

Take the direct high-speed coach (No. 919) from the north side of Deshengmen Arrow Tower in Beijing to Yanqing. The journey takes about 90 minutes without traffic. Then, hire a local driver for a minivan to Haituo Village, Yanjiaping, or Xidazhuangke. Prices per trip vary based on distance: around 80 RMB, 140 RMB, and 160 RMB respectively. Prices are negotiable.

Tip: For safety reasons due to mountain roads, no more than six people should ride in one vehicle.

Self-driving

Take the Badaling Expressway (now the Beijing–Tibet Expressway). Follow the signs to Yanqing, then take G110 through Zhangshanying Town. After seeing the sign for Songshan Park, turn right toward Songshan and continue straight. After passing the Yanjiaping Pass, descend and pass through Jiangzhuangzi Village. Look for a right-turn intersection, then drive a short distance to reach Haituo Village and the scenic area.
