Concise West Route Road Guide:
Beijing ― G6 Jingzang Expressway ― Chicheng/Huailai Exit ― Chicheng ― Guyuan ― Datian
Good road conditions, mostly no mountain roads, light two-way traffic, total distance 320 km. 5-hour drive, no fee to enter Bashang. *Note: Not sure if they still charge the Bashang entry fee, but we didn’t encounter any. (Highly recommended)
Detailed Route:
First Segment: Jingzang Expressway Section. Take G6 Jingzang Expressway (formerly Badaling Expressway), drive straight through Juyongguan, pass the Badaling Exit (58.6 km), continue on the expressway toward Zhangjiakou/Yanqing direction, pass Kangzhuang City Boundary Toll Station (67.1 km, toll 30 RMB), then keep going. Exit at Chicheng/Huailai Exit (105.7 km), pay the toll (15 RMB) at the exit, then turn left at the T-junction, follow the signs and drive straight toward Chicheng.
Second Segment: To Chicheng, about 70 km. Pass through Wangjialou, Chang’anling Tunnel, Toupa, Honghe Bridge, etc. Follow the signs and drive straight toward Chicheng. After passing Honghe Bridge, you’re close to Chicheng. When you see a gas station on the left and a sign indicating a left turn to Chicheng, do not turn left (the city roads are tricky). Continue straight for 750 meters to a T-junction—going straight leads to Fengning, but you should turn left onto Xiacheng Avenue, then follow the road all the way toward Guyuan.
Third Segment: To Guyuan, about 70 km. Drive toward Guyuan on the newly built road—it’s very smooth. Pass through Chicheng County, follow the main road past Maoyu Bridge, Hongnitang Village, Xiaochang, and after passing Longquan Yong, you’ll soon reach the Guyuan intersection.
Third Segment: To Datian, about 40 km. When you’re close to Guyuan, there’s a PetroChina gas station on the left. Shortly after passing the gas station, you’ll see a sign on the roadside that says “25th,” then there’s a right turn ahead (you’ll see a large suspension bridge). Turn right and drive straight for about 40 km—keep going without turning—to reach Datian (Bashang Grassland).
