Gaocheng Site

The Gaocheng Site is a cultural relic protection unit of Henan Province.

The site is located to the north of Gaocheng Village, Wuxing Township, Puyang County. In the 1960s, Guo Moruo, then President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, paid close attention to the ruins of the capital city of Wei at Diqu and organized personnel to conduct investigations here. Later, archaeologists carried out multiple drillings and preliminary excavations at the site, discovering remains such as city walls on all four sides. In 2005, large-scale trial excavations were conducted. The city covers an area of approximately 9.16 million square meters, with well-preserved city walls. It is an ancient city site with rammed earth layers from the Longshan Culture, Shang Dynasty, Western Zhou Dynasty, Spring and Autumn–Warring States Period, and Han Dynasty stacked upon one another. The overall layout of the city site is rectangular, with a moat surrounding the outer perimeter of the city walls. Ritualistic activities were observed during the construction of the city walls in the Eastern Zhou period. A large number of Longshan Culture pottery shards were discovered through drilling at the northwest corner of the site, and similar shards were also found along the western and southern walls, indicating that this was a relatively large settlement of the Longshan Culture. In June 2006, over 20 experts and scholars from the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Peking University, and the Henan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology conducted on-site inspections and academic evaluations, unanimously concluding that the site was the location of the capital city of the State of Wei—Diqu—during the late Spring and Autumn to Warring States periods. In 2013, the ruins of the Wei State’s ancient city (Gaocheng Site) were designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
