Nanyawan Paleolithic Site

The Nanyawan Paleolithic Site is located in Nanyawan Cave, Fanjiawang Village, Zhuge Town. The cave sits about 100 meters above the small river at the foot of the mountain, with an elevation of 483 meters. It lies 6.5 kilometers west of the Yi River. The cave entrance faces south, is 3.6 meters high, 5 meters wide, and extends 14 meters deep. It is a horizontal limestone cave. Inside, brown clay deposits contain chipped stone tools, deer antler fossils, and fragmented mammal fossils. Excavated items include stone cores, stone flakes, and deer antler fossils. According to identification by Professor Lü Zun’e from the Department of Archaeology at Peking University, the deer antlers belong to the Père David’s deer and date back some 200,000 to 300,000 years. The stone cores and flakes were made by ancient humans, representing early Paleolithic cultural remains from the same period as the Yiyuan Man, making this a representative site of ancient human activity.

Zhuge Town: Located in the northwest of Yishui County, Zhuge Town is a mountainous and reservoir area town. The town center is 28 kilometers from the county seat. It borders Gaqiao Town and Shagou Town to the east, Yishui Town and Longjiaquan Township to the south, Quanzhuang Township to the west, and Yiyuan County to the north. Its geographical coordinates are between 35°55′ and 36°05′ north latitude, and 118°25′ and 118°38′ east longitude.
