Hengshui Hedong Park

Hedong Park is situated on Renmin East Road in the city center, adjacent to the Fuyang River embankment to the north. It was originally a waste pit, with construction starting in 2003 and the park officially opening to the public for free on October 1, 2005. Designed as a small park for local residents, it spans a total area of 3.15 hectares, including 2.26 hectares of green space and 8,900 square meters of paved areas. The park features over 10 garden ornaments, 15 landscape lights, and 9 sets of benches. Over 20,000 trees and shrubs have been planted, such as ash trees, hibiscus, and light bamboo, along with 20,600 square meters of lawn.

In terms of planning principles, the park emphasizes openness. The southern side is open, while the northern boundary features a semi-transparent fence to enhance integration with the external environment and create an organic connection with the greenery along the Fuyang River, giving the park a sense of depth. Additionally, great importance is placed on terrain shaping, using topographical variation as a spatial feature. Micro-terrain techniques are employed to introduce rich vertical changes within the park. As the surrounding area is mostly flat, these elevation changes help the park stand out. The two hills in the northeast corner serve as the highest points, with the terrain sloping gently from the east and north toward the south and west, leading smoothly to the central square and playing a unique role in the spatial design.

The central square features a sculpture titled “Keeping Pace with the Times,” symbolizing Hengshui’s development advancing in step with the era. The design approach also adheres to the “people-oriented” principle. Functionally, it takes human needs into account by incorporating garden ornaments and fitness equipment at a human scale, and dividing the space into active and quiet zones based on activity types. Spatially, pathways serve as the structural framework, running throughout the park and connecting various sequential spaces while also acting as boundaries between active and quiet areas. The plantings are arranged at varying heights and densities, with diverse and complementary species selected to achieve the overall effect of “flowers in spring, shade in summer, fruit in autumn, and greenery in winter.” The northern section mainly uses ash trees and koelreuteria trees to harmonize with the surrounding environment, while the hills feature a mixed planting of trees, shrubs, grass, and flowers to highlight seasonal changes. The area around the square is adorned with flowering plants and colorful green blocks to emphasize vibrant color variation.
