The Site of Hutangtang Tianning Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Hengshui City.

Tianning Temple, located six kilometers west of Hengshui city center, is an ancient temple from the Ming Dynasty. Historically renowned, it was a royal monastery. Records indicate that at its peak, the temple complex spanned 800 acres. Due to historical reasons, it experienced several periods of rise and decline. Fortunately, through favorable circumstances, Venerable Miaolian from Hebei and local devotees in Hengshui invited Venerables Shengyu and Daohang to restore this sacred site. Approved by the government, Tianning Temple was rebuilt on its original site and officially reopened on September 10, 2011. The first phase of reconstruction, including the Mahavira Hall, Universal Preaching Hall, dining hall, dormitory building, reception hall, and Dharma distribution center, has been successfully completed. The temple inherits the grandeur of a thousand-year-old monastery—majestic and upright—blending traditional Buddhist architectural philosophy with a modern aesthetic. It complements the vibrant, contemporary charm of Hengshui, the “City of Lakes,” and is set to become another iconic landmark of the city. Leveraging this ancient temple, Hengshui is establishing a Buddhist holy site, aiming to develop it into a renowned destination that integrates Buddhist culture with tourism and leisure.

Tianning Temple serves not only as a place for monks and devotees to practice, worship, and propagate Buddhism but also as a venue for preserving, inheriting, and promoting Buddhist culture. The restoration of Tianning Temple not only revives the historical appearance of the ancient monastery but also continues and promotes Buddhist heritage, while adding a new attraction for tourists in Hengshui.

Infused with a contemporary atmosphere, it harmonizes with the charming “City of Lakes” that is Hengshui, becoming another iconic building in the city. It also serves as a key site for monks to practice, worship, and spread Buddhist teachings, as well as a great destination for leisure and tourism.
