Zhang Xiaozhuang Incident Memorial Monument

The Zhang Xiaozhuang Incident Memorial Monument is located in Zhang Xiaozhuang, Lepingpu Town, Chiping County.

In June 1940, the headquarters of the Fourth (Yundong) Sub-bureau of the Communist Party of China in Western Shandong (publicly known as the Yellow River Department), due to restricted activities in Boping, planned to relocate to the border area of Chiping (Ping), Changqing (Qing), and Yucheng (Cheng). On the night of the 13th, the sub-bureau headquarters and over 70 members of the sub-bureau party school marched for a day and arrived at Zhang Xiaozhuang in Chiping. Their movements were accidentally detected by the Japanese army. In the early hours of the 14th, they were suddenly attacked by more than 200 Japanese soldiers stationed in Chiping and Jinan. The sub-bureau leaders immediately organized a breakout. Due to having only a few firearms, the sub-bureau personnel suffered heavy losses during the escape, with only around 10 people, including Guo Shaoying, head of the propaganda department of the sub-bureau, managing to break through. A total of 39 people, including Liu Peitong, secretary of the sub-bureau, other sub-bureau officials, party school students, and villagers, were killed. Another 38 people, including Qin Huaiyu, director of the academic affairs office of the party school, were captured. After the incident, local villagers used carts to transport most of the martyrs' remains to Zhangjialou in the east of Zhaoniu River (now Gaodi Township, Dong'e County) for burial.

Currently, some of the old houses where the sub-bureau headquarters and party school members stayed overnight still remain in the southeast corner of Zhang Xiaozhuang. These houses are mostly traditional quadrangle courtyards with blue brick bases, rammed earth gables, black tile roofs, wooden doors, and paper windows. Some are well-preserved, while others are now in ruins. On the blue bricks of one old house, there are several bullet holes of varying depths left by Japanese machine gun fire at the time. By the roadside of the north street in the village, there is a damaged stone monument that recounts the details of the Zhang Xiaozhuang Massacre. In the southwest corner of the village, there were originally three martyr graves, but two were later relocated, leaving only one solitary grave remaining. In October 2010, the Lepingpu Town Party Committee, the town government, and the village committee of Zhang Xiaozhuang built a memorial monument, on which the details of the Zhang Xiaozhuang Massacre are finely engraved.
