Hometown of Song Jiang

The Hometown of Song Jiang is a cultural tourism attraction.

Yuncheng is the hometown of the heroes from *Water Margin*, often referred to as “Of the 108 heroes of Liangshan, 72 came from Yuncheng.” The area boasts abundant tourism resources inspired by the classic novel *Water Margin*, such as Song Jiang’s hometown Songjia Village, Chao Gai’s hometown Dongxi Village, Wu Yong’s birthplace Cheshi, and the site where the Birthday Gift Convoy was cleverly seized—Huangnigang—all located in Yuncheng.

Song Jiang, a leader of the peasant uprising in the late Northern Song Dynasty, was from Songjia Village, Shuibao, Yuncheng. From a young age, he exhibited outstanding leadership, bravery, and generosity, often standing up for the weak and fighting against injustice. In the first year of Emperor Huizong’s Xuanhe reign (1119), he led a rebellion with 36 others, conducting operations across Shandong and Hebei, covering ten prefectures. Tens of thousands of government troops dared not confront them, and they once set up camp at Liangshan Marsh. Throughout his life, Song Jiang demonstrated great integrity, was skilled at recognizing talent, and upheld righteousness, earning the deep respect of his soldiers and the local people, and is revered by later generations. In 1985, the Song Jiang Martial Arts School was established in Yuncheng and is now known as the Song Jiang Martial Arts Institute. Currently, the institute has 42 combined liberal arts and martial arts classes with over 5,000 students. It has participated in 58 national-level celebratory performances, receiving widespread acclaim both domestically and internationally. The institute has also won more than 900 medals in major domestic and international competitions, making it a shining jewel of Yuncheng.
