Songjin River

Songjin River is located on the eastern side of Yuncheng County in Shandong Province, about 2 kilometers from the county town. According to the Yuncheng County Annals, the Songjin River starts from the east bank of the Juan-Yun River at Ligai Village in Wu’an Town, flows northward past the eastern part of Yuncheng, and eventually enters Dongping Lake of Liangshan. The river is 22 kilometers long, with an average width of 200 meters, a water accumulation area of 8,000 mu, and an average storage capacity of 100 million cubic meters. The average water depth is 2.5–3.0 meters, and the water sources include Yellow River water and natural water.

After the dredging of Balihu River in 1964, a section from Tangdian to Balihu became a medium-sized reservoir. In 1976, it was officially named Batao Reservoir (now known as Songjinhe Reservoir). The reservoir stretches 9.8 kilometers from Tangdian Sluice in the north to Bianzhuang Gully in the south, with a bottom width of 100 meters, a riverbed elevation of 4.0 meters, an average annual water accumulation area of 8,000 mu, an annual water diversion and storage volume of 17.382 million cubic meters, and a drainage area of 133 square kilometers. In 1990, 100,000 workers carried out deep excavation and management, moving 40 million cubic meters of earth, which made the reservoir even wider.

The beautiful Songjin River once provided Yuncheng residents with a good ecological environment. The river was home to a variety of plants and wildlife. Its clear waters served as a vital irrigation source for farmlands along both banks, a natural pasture for developing animal husbandry, and a popular spot for swimming and leisure.

Wu’an Town: Wu’an Town administers 61 administrative villages and 94 natural villages, with 6,067 hectares of arable land and a total population of 59,000. It covers an area of 90 square kilometers. Since 1998, while ensuring the cultivation of major grain crops, the town has vigorously adjusted its planting structure and actively promoted the “Three Ten-Thousand” project. The town’s total area for melons and vegetables reached 1,733 hectares; the area for forest and fruit planting reached 2,066 hectares, including 733 hectares of fruit trees; and 333 hectares were planted with mulberry.
