Songjiang Lake

Songjiang Lake is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

Songjiang Lake is located in the northeastern part of Yuncheng County, outside Lengzhuang Village in Chengtun Town. Not far to the east lies the border of Liangshan County. Covering an area of over 1,000 acres, with approximately 800 acres of water surface, it is more than 20 kilometers from Yuncheng.

Songjiang Lake is a remnant of the ancient Baling Liangshan Marsh. During the Northern Song Dynasty, Liangshan Marsh was a vast lake, with parts of it situated in both Yuncheng and Jizhou prefectures. The Liangshan Marsh of that time, if described using today’s administrative divisions, roughly spanned the eastern and southern parts of Yuncheng, the northern part of Juye, the western part of Wenshang, the central and southern parts of Liangshan, forming a kidney-shaped curve. The current Songjiang Lake is located in the northwestern part of the ancient Liangshan Marsh. After the Yellow River shifted its course southward in the late Northern Song Dynasty, Liangshan Marsh gradually shrank, moved northward, and dried up. The present-day Songjiang Lake evolved from the former lake surface into the channel of the Songjiang River, which still receives water from the Guangji River and flows northward into the Daqing River (which became the current course of the Yellow River after the river changed its route to Shandong in 1855). After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, governance measures were implemented on the Songjiang River. A dam was built at Lelou to intercept the flow, and the remaining waters were redirected through the Yuncheng River into the Huai River. As a result, Songjiang Lake has now become an independent body of water.

Originally designated as an eco-economic zone, the lake was abundant with reeds and lotuses, supporting fish and shrimp farming. In recent years, greater emphasis has been placed on developing its tourism potential. Trees have been planted, shorelines reinforced, pavilions and monuments erected, and waterways dredged, all contributing to making this natural body of water even more picturesque.

Legend has it that in the past, heroes of the Water Margin roamed the misty expanse of Liangshan Marsh, righting wrongs, fighting injustice, and aiding the poor—epic deeds that shook the era. Over eight hundred years later, despite the sweeping changes of time, this tranquil lake remains, offering visitors a place to reflect on the tales of those legendary heroes. Today, Songjiang Lake—the once dynamic "land of heroes"—has transformed into a serene "peaceful waterbody" for leisure and recreation in modern times.

Before reaching the lakeshore, the fragrance of lotus flowers wafts through the air. Standing by the lake, one sees willows lining the banks and lotus blossoms dotting the water. Gazing into the distance, endless reed marshes stretch out as the wind rustles the cattails, sways the lotuses, and sends ducks and geese into flight—an unspoiled ecological landscape that refreshes the mind and lifts the spirit. The lake glimmers under the sunlight, with clouds mirrored on its surface. Fish occasionally break the surface, blowing bubbles and rippling the water. Amid the lotus blooms, shy flowers peek out like demure maidens or the legendary beauty Xishi washing silk—elegant yet enchantingly delicate. Being here inspires one to recite poetic lines such as “Pink-tipped blossoms bloom among green leaves; the fragrance of lotus rises with the mist on my clothes,” or “Unstained by the mud, yet not aloof from the sullied waters.” Surrounded by such poetic beauty, one feels as though they’ve transcended the mundane world.

Deep within Songjiang Lake, vast expanses of reeds and small islands divide the water into sections of varying sizes. Some waterways are long and narrow, others broad and open, while some twist and turn in intricate loops. Tall willows stand on the islands, dotted occasionally with wildflowers—yellow, white, or pink—that bring life and an air of mystery to these islets. Boating through the marshes, imagining the scenes on the islands and listening to the symphony of insects among the reeds, one can truly sense the enigmatic tranquility of these places. Amid the dense reeds and cattails, the tufted seed spikes resemble the hidden weapons of ancient heroes, guarding every inch of this land. This scene evokes images of the Water Margin heroes navigating the vast 800-li marsh, living in harmony with nature, gliding across the waters in small boats, poling gently, fishing or resting, drinking or singing—living with unmatched freedom and joy.

This is a truly wonderful destination for leisure and tourism. Friends near and far, take the time to visit Songjiang Lake—to admire the scenery, gather inspiration, escape the heat, reflect on the past, and let your spirit soar. Immerse your thoughts in the clear, ethereal waters of Songjiang Lake.
