The Site of the Lincheng Porcelain Kiln

The Lincheng Porcelain Kiln Site is a cultural relic protection unit of Hebei Province.

The discovery of Tang Dynasty Xing porcelain kilns in Lincheng and the unearthing of a large number of physical artifacts from the prosperous Tang period and even early Tang have filled a gap in the study of China’s ceramic history.

The white porcelain produced in Xingzhou in northern China during the Tang Dynasty and the celadon produced in Yuezhou (present-day Shaoxing, Zhejiang) in the south were equally renowned and could stand comparison with each other. Celadon was praised as being “like jade or ice,” while Xingzhou white porcelain was famed for being “like silver or snow.” The emergence of Xing kiln white porcelain changed China’s long-standing dominance of celadon. In particular, the white porcelain inscribed with the character “Ying” unearthed in Neiqiu provided the kiln source for the “Ying”-marked white porcelain bowls found in the Daming Palace in Shaanxi and the “Ying”-marked white porcelain boxes housed in the Shanghai Museum. The production of fine white porcelain at the Xing kiln represents a major contribution by the kiln to the Chinese nation and remains an important subject requiring further in-depth scientific research. The Xing kiln holds a highly significant position in the ceramic history of China and even the world, and it continues to possess great value in terms of preservation, academia, and scientific research.
