Yunyan Temple

Yunyan Temple was first built in the second year of the Zhenyuan era (786 AD) during the Tang Dynasty under Emperor Dezong. Its founding abbot, Tan Sheng, was a renowned and respected monk. The temple was destroyed during the wars of the Five Dynasties period, but was gradually restored during the Song Dynasty. It came to be known as one of the Six Great Temples of Xiushui, alongside Huanglong Chan Temple and five others. During the Ming Dynasty’s Jiajing era, Lin Chunze, the then prefectural intendant, inscribed a plaque for the temple reading “The Foremost Chan Grove on the Xiujian River.”
