In early August 1927, the Guard Regiment of the 2nd Army of the 4th Army Group of the National Revolutionary Army was ordered to march from Wuhan to Nanchang to take part in the uprising. As the Nanchang Uprising forces had already moved south to Guangdong, the plan was changed, and the troops were redirected to Xiushui and Tonggu for rest and awaiting orders. In early September, the Guard Regiment, along with a portion of the Pingjiang Workers’ and Peasants’ Volunteer Corps and the Xiushui Peasant Self-Defense Army—totaling over 2,000 personnel—formed the 1st Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Division of the 1st Army of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army in Xiushui, with Zhong Wenzhang serving as the regimental commander.

The 1st Regiment was the main force of the Autumn Harvest Uprising on the Hunan-Jiangxi border. After the uprising began, all officers and soldiers of the regiment shouted the slogan “Red scarves tied around our necks, we care only for death, not life,” and set off from Xiushui to attack the enemy at Changshou Street in Pingjiang. When the main force reached Jinping in Pingjiang, they were suddenly ambushed from the rear by bandit forces recently incorporated by Yu XiuDu, resulting in two battalions being scattered and losses of over 200 men and weapons. Regimental Commander Zhong Wenzhang went missing. Lu Deming decisively decided to withdraw from the battle and led the troops to transfer toward Wenjiashi, following Mao Zedong’s advance to Jinggangshan, later becoming a core force of the 4th Army of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army.

The Former Site of the Headquarters of the 1st Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Division of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army was originally the Fengshan Xian Academy, built in the 3rd year of the Tongzhi reign during the Qing Dynasty; it consists of a front hall, middle hall, and rear hall. The front and rear halls have long been rebuilt, but the surviving middle hall measures 15.3 meters in width and 21 meters in depth, with a construction area of 321 square meters. In June 1986, the Xiushui County People’s Government designated it as a cultural relics protection unit of Xiushui County; in May 2006, the State Council listed it as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. In June 2001, the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee designated it as a National Patriotic Education Demonstration Base.
