Renovated with nearly 20 million yuan invested by the municipal government, Yingtan Park now boasts deeper cultural significance and higher landscape quality. It presents itself to the public with a new image of refined taste and modern civility, stretching out its green arms to embrace its passionate citizens.

Renovation is an external enhancement, but free admission is a tremendous gesture of goodwill. Since the renovation, Yingtan Park has been open to the public free of charge, attracting dozens of times more visitors than before, with enthusiasm and openness magnified exponentially.

It remains a paradise of joy for the locals. Enthusiasm soars, happiness collides. Walkers, leisure seekers, and fitness enthusiasts nod and smile at one another. Laughter, joy, civility, and harmony fill the air.

At night, when colorful lights illuminate the park, they enhance the joy and beauty, transforming this once tranquil park into a nocturnal forest, a colorful forest.

At the entrance, cheerful dance music plays as hundreds of locals move to the rhythm. Some dance in pairs, others in fitness groups, freely and exuberantly. The rhythm, synchronized steps, and vibrant lights make it a sea of music and joy. Further west, dozens of elderly women dressed in red and green, with flower drums tied around their waists, twist and drum in rhythmic precision. The resonant drumbeats echo through the night sky, as if striking the hearts of the listeners. To the east, under the illuminated basketball court, energetic young people engage in a lively game, leaping for slam dunks and earning bursts of applause.

In the early morning, with light mist lingering and birds chirping, it’s the perfect time for exercise. Under ancient camphor trees, in octagonal pavilions, along the Xin River, by the drainage lake, and within the groves of greenery, all are ideal spots for morning workouts. The roller-skating rink is even livelier, with hundreds dancing to upbeat fitness routines, creating a grand scene that energizes everyone. The sight is astonishing, the atmosphere electrifying. Even if you don’t dance, just being there will envelop you in enthusiasm—you’ll find yourself swaying to the rhythm, unable to resist joining in.

And the variety of activities is endless: dancing, health exercises, tai chi, erhu performances, morning singing, fan dancing, volleyball, badminton, and leisurely strolls through the woods.

As one elderly woman with white hair put it best: “Yingtan Park is a place for relaxation and fitness, as well as for health and harmony. We’re grateful to the government for doing something great for the citizens.”

The History of Yingtan Park

Yingtan Park is the largest natural park in Jiangxi, boasting beautiful scenery: “Eagles dance above it, torrents swirl within it”—it is said that Yingtan got its name from this. The name “Yingtan Park” has undergone several changes over time.

It is understood that Yingtan Park was officially established in 1957. The first garden structure built on the eastern hill of Longtou Mountain, called “Jiyi Pavilion,” became a popular spot for locals at the time. A stone arch bridge was constructed by the Xin River in the center of the park, with a four-cornered pavilion—Liufang Pavilion—built in the middle of the bridge arch.

In 1958, the first basketball court in Yingtan Town was built on the eastern part of Longtou Mountain, becoming a main venue for organizing basketball matches and mass cultural performances. It was named “Longtou Mountain Park” after the mountain. According to local resident Gui Yande, the original entrance of Yingtan Park was not in its current location but opposite the Yuehu District Library. At that time, a 500-meter bamboo fence was erected along the street side of the park, with a simple gate built in the middle section. Outside the bamboo fence, where the current T-junction at the park entrance is now, were vast rice fields.

In 1959, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the town government allocated funds to create new attractions in the park, including “A World of Its Own,” “Flower Stream Fish Viewing,” “Birds on the Branch,” “Meeting of Souls Altar,” and “Drunken Flower Shade,” along with a simple greenhouse to begin cultivating park flowers. In the same year, “Longtou Mountain Park” was renamed “Yingtan Park.” Between 1962 and 1963, the park’s roads underwent systematic renovation and expansion, forming primary and secondary pathways. For visitor rest, cement-topped tables and chairs were installed in the wooded areas. For safety, a 300-meter railing was built along the riverside path, and an observation deck, Guantan Platform, was constructed. In 1966, “Yingtan Park” was renamed “Yingtan People’s Park,” and this name remained until 1989. On June 28, 1989, with the approval of the Yingtan Municipal People’s Government, “Yingtan People’s Park” reverted to its original name, “Yingtan Park,” which has been used to this day.
