Shanghai Moon Lake Sculpture Park – A Tribute to 80 Masterpieces by World-Renowned Artists

This time, I was invited to visit theMoon Lake Sculpture Parkin Sheshan, Shanghai, for a business trip and had the pleasure of dining there. I was incredibly excited, as I had long heard that the park houses 80 huge sculptures by world-renowned artists. Spanning 1,300 acres, the park offers ample opportunity to explore these masterpieces.

In the midst of this bustling city lies a sculpture park rich in culture and artistry. Here, one can perceive the subtle emotional nuances of sculptors through their three-dimensional, massive works—each piece narrating a beautiful story or conveying the meaning of life. The park’s design revolves around the four seasons, with the Moon Lake dividing it into seasonal docks and waterfronts, complemented by landscapes and architecture that reflect the ambiance of each season.

Most of the massive artworks in the park were created on-site by the artists themselves, resulting in pieces that often visually connect with “Moon Lake” and carry symbolic meanings related to “water,” such as reflecting the theme that “water is the source of life.” These works also serve as reminders to respect and cherish nature.

Today’s luncheon venue, “Autumn Moon Pavilion,” is a glass house situated on the lake. Bathed in sunlight from all directions and surrounded by lake and mountain scenery, the gently swaying willow trees on the water’s surface create a truly romantic and picturesque scene.

▲Another corner of the restaurant features a cozy sofa area for a short rest or tea, offering a leisurely vibe akin to sitting under a tree after a satisfying meal.

▲The dishes at Autumn Moon Pavilion are exquisitely prepared, not greasy, and often incorporate health-conscious elements and artistic plating. A full set, including dessert, consists of up to nine courses—featuring steak, shrimp balls, Matsusaka pork, sea cucumber, abalone, light vegetarian dishes, as well as sweet soups and fruits—truly delightful.

▲Ancient Giant Tree, woven from real and artificial trees, stands 26 meters tall with a maximum trunk diameter of 14 meters. Its twisted roots and playful design are full of charm. The bird’s nest at the top is handwoven from vines collected deep in the mountains, featuring a special double-layer waterproof design that keeps it leak-free even on rainy days. Climbing to the top of the treehouse offers the best panoramic view of the park.

▲Waterfront Sandy Beach, built with 5,000 tons of yellow sand, features a set of life-sized ceramic statues sitting, running, or playing on the beach, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a Hawaiian summer shore.

▲On the opposite side of the lake lies the “Waystation Café” at Moon Lake’s Autumn Shore. Designed with large transparent glass panels, it offers unobstructed views of the lake’s beauty.

Although the journey from central Shanghai to Sheshan is a bit of a distance, taking the metro is quite convenient. What’s more surprising is the surprisingly large number of foreign tourists, family travelers, and even visitors who come here on vacation with their pets.
