Ancient Pagoda Park

Ancient Pagoda Park is a cultural tourism attraction.

Also known as Ancient Pagoda Park, Guta Suburban Park is located in Wangsiying Area in the southeastern part of Chaoyang District, Beijing, covering an area of 836 acres.

At the southernmost end of the park stands the "Shifang Chufu Treasure Pagoda," an octagonal nine-story brick pagoda built in 1538 during the Ming Dynasty. As a municipal-level protected cultural relic in Beijing, it has become a symbol of the park, which is named after it.

The park features four main scenic areas: the West Gate Area, Central Lake Area, Mountain Flower Garden Area, and Ancient Pagoda Area. Among these, the Central Lake Area is the main scenic zone, named Qicai Chunhua Garden. It includes attractions such as the Flower King Platform, Crabapple Plaza, pavilion-corridor complexes, and Pingquan Cascading Waters. These elements organically combine the ecological environment of the suburban park with urban garden landscape features, and are equipped with comprehensive environmental public service facilities. The park is home to over 200 species of trees, shrubs, and flowers, totaling approximately 220,000 plants.

The grand West Gate is fronted by a rockery flower bed, and next to the gate stands a tall observation platform. On the north side of the gate, there is a sizable free parking lot. The Central Lake Area encompasses the Qicai Chunhua Garden, Flower King Platform, Crabapple Plaza, pavilion-corridor complexes, and Pingquan Cascading Waters, making it the park’s focal point. Aside from the Shifang Chufu Treasure Pagoda, the Central Lake Area represents the essence of the park. Strolling through it brings a sense of peace and tranquility, washing away all worries. The Mountain Flower Garden blooms with colorful flowers, and stone-paved paths wind through lush greenery and undulating terrain, with a distant view of the pagoda.

Most suburban parks feature newly built landscapes, but Guta Suburban Park in Chaoyang District is home to an ancient pagoda over 400 years old. Upon reflection, Beijing has hundreds of parks, large and small, yet only this one is named after an ancient pagoda.

Walking in through the East Gate, the park is lush with trees, tranquil in atmosphere, gently breezy, and crisscrossed with small bridges... Take a deep breath, and it feels as though your lungs have been cleansed by the greenery — truly refreshing. On the roadside lawns, a couple of tents have also become attractions. Most visitors bring their own food to play cards and relax on the grassy lawns by the lake. Some bring their pets along. Park management informed us that pets are currently allowed, but owners must clean up after them to help preserve the park’s environment.

True to its name, the park is home to a genuine ancient pagoda — the Shifang Chufu Treasure Pagoda, built in 1538 during the Ming Dynasty. The pagoda is not easy to find, tucked away at the southernmost end of the park. It isn’t tall and is hidden by dense woods, so it can be a bit tricky to locate without following signs. Reportedly, every visitor to Guta Suburban Park makes their way to the pagoda. Though the pagoda leans slightly and its inscriptions have faded, seeing a 400-year-old structure up close within such a vibrant suburban park creates a unique sense of time-travel — arguably the park’s most distinctive feature.
