Construction History
The development and construction of Chaoyang Park can be roughly divided into four phases:
The first is the preparatory phase, from 1984 to 1988, which mainly involved the initial establishment of the park, forming a “park without walls” based around the water body.
The second is the initial development phase, from 1988 to 1995, focusing primarily on real estate development and the construction of cultural landscapes.
The third is the accelerated construction phase, from 1995 to 2000. During this time, Chaoyang Park organized the “People’s Park Built by the People” project and the “50th National Day Tribute” project, completing the southern scenic area of the park in September 1999.
The fourth is the rapid development phase, from 2000 to the present. The Chaoyang District Party Committee and District Government included the construction of Chaoyang Park as a key district project. Beijing Chaoyang Park Development and Operation Company increased financing efforts and fully advanced the development of scenic areas. Over 3,900 households and more than 40 enterprises within the planned park area were relocated. Building on the completed southern scenic area, further greening upgrades and municipal infrastructure improvements were carried out. Development also included the European-style scenic area, Cherry Blossom Garden scenic area, and the sports garden centered around the tennis center, along with the development of the entire northern 1,300-mu planned area. On September 15, 2004, Chaoyang Park was fully opened to the public. From 1988 to 2008, the park completed over 20 scenic areas and attractions, including the Central Tree Planting Forest, Generals’ Forest, Esperanto Forest, Vast Layered Woods, International Friendship Forest, Water Recreation Area, South Gate Scenic Area, Brave World Amusement Park, European Charm, Green Meadow Song, Source of Life, Art Plaza, Waterside Isle, and Eco Valley. The greened area reached 2,500 mu. After an international call for proposals and extensive consultations with experts and stakeholders, the “Comprehensive Master Plan for Chaoyang Park” was approved by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Urban Planning in March 2004. The plan positions Chaoyang Park as a large-scale, comprehensive, multi-functional cultural leisure and entertainment park focused primarily on landscaping. Based on different functional characteristics, the plan divides the park into a central activity zone, sports and fitness zone, ecological science zone, horticultural viewing zone, cultural leisure zone, comprehensive service zone, administrative management zone, and historic architecture protection zone.
