Tomb of Liu Yan

The Tomb of Liu Yan is a cultural heritage site protected by Jiangxi Province.

The Tomb of Liu Yan is located in Jishui County. In March 2018, it was designated as part of the sixth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage protection units in Jiangxi Province.

Liu Yan (1394–1457), courtesy name Xuanhua, art name Shiyu, was a native of Jishui. He was born in the 27th year of the Hongwu era during the reign of the Ming Dynasty’s founding emperor, and died in the first year of the Tianshun era under Emperor Yingzong at the age of 64. In the 7th year of the Zhengtong era (1442 AD), he ranked first in the imperial examinations and was appointed as an editor. During the Jingtai era, he presided over the civil service examination in Shuntian but was dismissed for upholding fairness. Later, he held successive official positions including Vice Minister of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices and Grand Secretary of Fengfang, overseeing the affairs of the Hanlin Academy. He passed away in the first year of the Tianshun era under Emperor Yingzong at the age of 64 and was posthumously honored with the title “Wenjie” (Cultured and Upright). Liu Yan had great literary talent and authored the 30-volume Collected Works of Liu Wenjie, which is listed in the Complete Library of the Four Treasuries.
