Langshan Academy

Langshan Academy is a cultural heritage site protected by Jiangxi Province.

Langshan Academy is located in Jishui County. In March 2018, it was designated as part of the sixth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage sites in Jiangxi Province.

The academy is a brick-and-wood structure built with finely jointed gray bricks, featuring a flush-gable roof, a sky-facing firewall, a single entrance with two courtyards, three bays, and a post-and-lintel wooden frame. It has a depth of 34.5 meters, a width of 15 meters, and covers an area of 517.5 square meters. The front features a covered corridor-style structure, with the four characters “Langshan Academy” (朗山书院) written in bold black regular script horizontally across the top of the lintel. Above the front hall is a painted caisson ceiling decorated with patterns of flowers, birds, insects, plants, figures, and landscapes. The painting is exquisitely crafted, with lifelike figures. There are arcades on both sides, spanning two floors and divided into several study rooms with wooden partitions. A central courtyard separates the first and second courtyards, with partition screens dividing them. The rear hall also features a caisson ceiling adorned with gilded designs of phoenixes piercing peonies, bats, bamboo, and plum blossoms, with carved floral ornaments at the four corners, all showing exquisite craftsmanship. Behind the precious wall is a stepped shrine used by the Zeng family of Litu Village to house ancestral tablets. The entire building is grand in scale and complex in structure, serving as a typical ancient structure that functions both as an academy and an ancestral hall.
