The Ancient Residential Complex of Yanfang

The Ancient Residential Complex of Yanfang is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Jiangxi Province.

Located in Yanfang Ancient Village, Jintan Town, Jishui County, Jiangxi Province, Yanfang Ancient Village is a historic and cultural village renowned for its well-preserved Ming and Qing architectural complexes. It currently features over 160 structures from the Ming and Qing dynasties, including ancestral halls, schools, memorial archways, residences, ancient wells, ponds, and tombs.

The houses in the ancient village are laid out in an orderly fashion, with lanes paved in bluestone, redstone, or pebbles. Interiors are adorned with gold leaf patterns, carved phoenix motifs, intricate carvings, and walls covered in calligraphy and paintings.

Like many traditional residences, the ancient buildings of Yanfang Village include ancestral halls, schools, memorial archways, residences, and ancient wells, exemplifying the classic architectural style of the Lu Ling region. Among the over 100 existing residential buildings in Yanfang Village, they can be divided into single structures and grouped complexes. Single structures include buildings such as the Da Fu Mansion and the Zhou Sima Mansion, while grouped complexes include the “Twenty House Courtyard,” the “Zhi Zheng Mansion,” and the “Lin Feng Courtyard.”

The ancient village is surrounded by more than 1,000 ancient camphor trees, as well as several citrus and tea plantations. The entire settlement is nestled within lush greenery, offering a highly picturesque landscape. In July 2003, Yanfang Ancient Village was designated as a Provincial-Level Historic and Cultural Village, and in 2007, it was further recognized as a “National Historic and Cultural Village.”
