Wan'an Hydropower Station

The Wan'an Hydropower Plant is located at Huangkongtan on the middle reaches of the Gan River, about 2 kilometers upstream from Wan'an County in Jiangxi Province. It lies east of the Beijing-Kowloon Railway, west of the Gan-Guangdong Expressway, 90 kilometers south of Ganzhou City — Jiangxi’s southern gateway — and 320 kilometers north of Nanchang, the province’s heroic capital. It is currently the largest hydropower plant in Jiangxi. The plant primarily generates electricity and also serves multiple comprehensive functions such as flood control, navigation, irrigation, and aquaculture. It acts as a key power exchange hub between northern and southern Jiangxi and plays roles in frequency regulation, peak shaving, and emergency reserve.

The Wan'an Hydropower Station adopts a construction plan of “completing the project in one phase and impounding the reservoir in stages.” The power station is classified as a Grade I project, with its main structures being Grade I. It is designed to withstand a once-in-a-millennium flood and verified against a once-in-10,000-years flood, with safeguards for the possible maximum flood. The final design elevation of the reservoir is 100 meters, with an installed capacity of 500,000 KW (5 × 100,000 KW). Currently operating under the initial phase, the normal reservoir water level is 96 meters, with an installed capacity of 400,000 KW (4 × 100,000 KW), and a designed average annual power generation of 1.15 billion KWh.

The main structures of the Wan'an Hydropower Complex consist of a concrete dam, spillway structures, the power plant building, a ship lock, an earth dam, and an irrigation canal headworks. The dam has a total length of 1,104 meters.

The maximum dam height is 68.1 meters, and the total reservoir capacity is 2.216 billion cubic meters. The ship lock is a 2×500

ton single-stage ship lock.

The construction of the Wan'an Hydropower Plant began in 1958. Due to various historical reasons, the project underwent a challenging history of “three starts and two suspensions.” Construction resumed in February 1978, the first generating unit went online in November 1990, all four units were operational by 1992, the reservoir was closed and impounded to 96 meters in 1993, and the project passed the national completion acceptance in January 1996. In March 2003, it underwent its first periodic dam safety inspection and was rated as a normal dam. Since its commissioning in November 1990, it has generated over 15.8 billion KWh of electricity cumulatively, achieved a production record of nearly a thousand days of safe operation, and gradually implemented greening, beautification, and lighting projects, becoming a garden-style factory. Since 1996, it has been awarded the “Safe and Civilized Production Standard Enterprise” by the former Ministry of Electric Power and “Double-Civilization Units” at the provincial and ministerial levels. In September 2000, it was honored by State Power Corporation as a “First-Class Hydropower Plant” and “Advanced Unit in Ideological and Political Work.” In 2002, it received the “Jiangxi Province Habitat Environment Example Award,” and in 2003, its safety production efforts were recognized with a “State Power Second-Class Certificate.” The plant’s Party Committee was awarded the “Advanced Grassroots Party Organization” by the Group Company Party Committee, and the plant’s labor union was honored as a “Model Workers’ Home” by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions.

After coming under the management of China Guodian Corporation in December 2002, the Wan'an Hydropower Plant followed the corporation’s eight-character work guideline of “Innovate, Expand, Solidify, Strengthen.” Guided by the principle of “Consolidating first-class achievements, refining core operations, vigorously developing diversified industries, strengthening the plant’s capabilities, and making new contributions to the revitalization of the power industry,” the plant diligently focused on production, operations, reform, and development. With renewed enthusiasm and vigor, it strides toward new goals.
