Tongmuling
Tongmuling is located to the north of Ciping and is a scenic area that combines cultural and natural attractions. The hills here are covered with tung trees, which bloom beautifully in spring and summer, hence the name "Tongmuling" (Tung Tree Ridge). Key attractions include a reservoir, poetry steles, and the site of the Qiluo'ao Battle.
During the struggle on Jinggang Mountain, the Red Army built a sentry post on Tongmuling, which was one of the famous five major sentry posts. Tongmuling features crisscrossing ravines and rugged terrain, with ancient stone steps and the Five-Li Pavilion dotting the landscape. On the eastern side, there is also a stone trough waterfall in a deep valley, stretching about 200 meters. Along the mountain road, clusters of deer-horn azaleas can be found.
Tongmuling is 9 kilometers northeast of Ciping, at an altitude of 866 meters, and is a scenic area that combines cultural and natural attractions. The area is named "Tongmuling" (Tung Tree Ridge) because tung trees cover the hills, blooming beautifully in spring and summer. During the struggle on Jinggang Mountain, the Red Army built a sentry post on Tongmuling, which was one of the famous five major sentry posts.
In May 1960, the renowned writer Du Xuan passed through Tongmuling during his trip to Jinggang Mountain. Impressed by the picturesque peaks, he wrote the poem "Tongmuling": Pine and fir stand lush and green, Clear streams brim, clouds circle the peaks. Travelers on the path feel as if in a painting, Amidst overlapping mountains stands a mighty pass. Each hill bears its own heroic legacy, And at every cliff, memories of valor arise. Could it be the blood shed in those years That dyes the azaleas an even deeper red?
Shiyandong (Stone Swallow Cave) is located 12 kilometers northeast of Ciping. This unique karst cave is formed from Devonian limestone, dating back approximately 250 to 380 million years. Inside Shiyandong, the stalactites are abundant and come in a dazzling array of shapes and sizes. There are stone trees, stone pillars, stone shoots, and stone flowers, all pure, translucent, and gleaming. Some stalactites resemble immortals, humans, or animals—such as Guanyin Sitting on a Lotus, Three Mothers Teaching Their Children, a Fawn Nursing, a Swan Bending Its Neck, and a Jade Ruyi—each exquisitely crafted and lifelike.
Shiyandong is winding and profound, with approximately 1,000 meters explored so far. The cave features a complex network of chambers, including nested caves within caves. Seven bead-like connected caves have been discovered, the largest of which is over 60 meters high and about 50 meters both long and wide, resembling a grand hall that could accommodate more than 1,000 people. The smallest cave is over 10 meters high, with lengths and widths of around 20 meters each. Inside the cave, springs trickle melodiously, creating a refreshing sound. Free-flying cave swallows add to the fascination.
Luofu is located 20 kilometers northeast of Ciping, at the foot of Tongmuling. It is a mountain basin covering approximately four square kilometers and serves as the headquarters of the provincial state-owned Jinggang Mountain Comprehensive Reclamation Farm. It is often referred to as "Little Ciping." Key attractions include a reservoir, peaks, the Five Springs, and the site of the Qiluo'ao Battle.
Qilu’ao, located to the northeast of Jinggang Mountain, 20 kilometers from Ciping, is a strategic mountain pass on the route from Jinggang Mountain to Taihe.
During the struggle on Jinggang Mountain, the Red Army carried out guerrilla warfare here. In February 1928, He Changgong assisted Wang Zuo’s troops in setting up an ambush here, successfully annihilating Yin Daoyi, the leader of the reactionary local armed forces on Jinggang Mountain. This victory marked the first major triumph for the Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army after ascending the mountain, boosting the morale of Wang Zuo’s forces and accelerating their reorganization.
In 1964, the local government erected a gate inscribed with Comrade [Mao Zedong]’s handwriting, “The First Mountain Under Heaven,” here as a memorial.
As early as the late Song Dynasty, people migrated here from Shandong and Henan to settle. Later, the Zhang family built a village in the center of the basin, vowing to claim all the surrounding mountains for the Zhang clan—hence the name. In 1929, when the main force of the Red Army left Jinggang Mountain, the melody of "Ten Farewells to the Red Army" sang: “The third farewell brings the Red Army to Nashan, Where golden corn shines bright on the hills. The corn seeds were sown by the Red Army, And the seeds they scattered blazed red across the sky.” The Jinggang Mountain Hot Spring Resort is situated on this red earth, enjoying a cool and moist climate with abundant sunshine. The temperature remains a constant 22°C year-round, and the springs are perpetually clear, with excellent water quality.
