The Former Residence of Comrade Mao Zedong in Daying is located in the center of Daying Village. On October 24, 1927, when Mao Zedong led the troops from the Autumn Harvest Uprising to Daying Village, Wang Zuo, the leader of the peasant self-defense army who was stationed in the "Zou House" in the Xiaowu Xia area, vacated some rooms in his military barracks for the workers' and peasants' revolutionary army to live in. Mao Zedong resided in the east wing room of this house. In Daying, Comrade Mao Zedong placed great importance on the work of uniting and reforming Wang Zuo’s troops. He assigned comrades such as He Changgong to carry out political work and military training within Wang Zuo’s forces. In February 1928, Wang Zuo’s troops and Yuan Wencai’s troops were reorganized into the 2nd Regiment of the 1st Division of the 1st Army of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army.

In the summer of 1928, the Red Fourth Army Hospital was relocated from Maoping in Ninggang to the Dashiwujing area. A medical station was set up in the central hall of this house, and Cao ?U, the president of the Red Army Hospital, also lived here.

In December 1928, Comrades Peng Dehuai and Teng Daiyuan led a part of the Red Fifth Army to Jinggangshan and later came to Daying, residing and working in the west wing of the house.

In February 1929, the reactionary Kuomintang occupied Dashiwujing and burned down all the houses in Daying. Only a section of the ruined wall of this house, a large rock in front where Mao Zedong used to sit and read newspapers, and two evergreen trees behind the house where Mao often watched the Red Army train under the trees remained. In 1960, when the people of Jinggangshan restored the Former Residence of Comrade Mao Zedong in Daying to its original appearance, they embedded the preserved section of the ruined wall into the new wall as a historical witness. They also carefully fertilized and cultivated the two evergreen trees behind the house, protected the rock where Comrade Mao Zedong once sat, and named it the “Reading Stone.”

On March 4, 1961, the State Council designated the “Former Residence of Comrade Mao Zedong in Daying” as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
